Uncertain about political agenda in blaming Rajapaksas: Wimalaweera Dissanayake

It is unclear what political agenda promoted to blame the Rajapaksas for the Easter Sunday attacks, Digamadulla district Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Wimalaweera Dissanayake said.

Addressing the media, he said several commissions had been set up in this regard.

In response to the Easter Sunday attacks, there have been calls for foreign investigations by various individuals, including Colombo Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. Notably, the FBI and Scotland Yard police have also been involved in conducting their own investigations into the incident, he added.

MP Dissanayake said that despite the setting up of commissions, there are still individuals who assert that the Rajapaksas were responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks.

"It is important to note that the Rajapaksas were not in power at the time of the attack, as the government was led by former President Maithiripala Sirisena, with Opposition Leader being Ranil Wickremesinghe," he said.

Furthermore, MP Dissanayake highlights that no one from the Rajapaksa family was part of the Cabinet during that period.

Therefore, it is a question of why everyone is trying to attack the Rajapaksas, MP Dissanayake said.

In addition to the previous points, MP Dissanayake explained that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) also played a role in bringing the Rajapaksas to power.

He mentioned that the JVP held political positions within the 2004 government. Furthermore, in 2015, NPP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake presented numerous files claiming to contain evidence of corruption that had taken place during the Rajapaksas' tenure.

MP Wimalaweera Dissanayake reveals that he had intended to investigate those files during their government, but unfortunately, that opportunity never materialized.

Subsequently, he mentioned that the JVP extended their support to bring Maithripala Sirisena to the Presidency and Ranil Wickremesinghe to the position of Prime Minister. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
