Update: Seneviratne tops heat, but misses out on semi-finals

Sri Lanka's Ganga Seneviratne finished first, clocking a time of 1:04.26 secs in the first heat of the Women's 100m backstroke event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

However, Seneviratne finished outside the time of the top 16 swimmers in the heats, and therefore did not progress to the semi-finals, ranking 30th out of 36 swimmers.

Swimming is heavily dominated by developed countries. You hardly see South Asians winning anything in swimming. Japan, Korea and China are up there from Asia, not a lot from anywhere else from Asia. Being 30 out of 36 is not a bad result for a Sri Lankan.

As it is in many sports here. The talent hunts and path way till today is unclear. Change managements and get overseas professional coaches that has made an impact. Not local think tanks. It's a shame that in the past also we have seen that we lost hundreds of great athletes in this country due to lack of guidance and support.
