Vegetable prices rise due to heavy rains and floods

Agrarian Organisations in the Central Province warned that the already soaring prices of vegetables would further increase due to the prevailing heavy rain and floods, which have caused crop devastation.

Vegetable cultivators expressed concern about harvesting their crops and applying fertilizer to their vegetable fields. They pointed out that vegetable cultivation in several areas in the Central Province had been devastated by floods.

They said tomatoes, beans, brinjals, and green chillies were the worst affected crops.

A representative of the Ambana Farmer Organisation, Y.M.S. Bandara, said wholesale traders from outstations were unavailable due to the breakdown of transport, preventing them from purchasing vegetables at the Economic Centers.
