Water tariffs set to rise in 2024 following VAT increase

Colombo, Dec 30 (Daily Mirror) - The National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWSDB) revealed that water tariffs will experience a 3% hike starting January 2024.

This adjustment aligns with the revised Value Added Tax (VAT) scheduled to be implemented on January 1.

The VAT (Amendment) Bill passed in Parliament on December 11, granting approval for an increase from the existing 15% to 18%.

Consequently, the NWSDB has decided to reflect this change in water tariffs, affecting consumers from the beginning of the new year.

These utility costs have had gradual increases as part of cost recovery pricing a long time ago. What all politicians were doing was putting their cronies and supporters to these institutions, making salary costs to be 85% of costs. Successive governments of all persuasions did that and it was only a matter of time for the bomb to explode. Now they are doing catch ups and even can't get rid of those useless thousands of workers. Add rampant corruption to this. They are still loss making and paying bonuses, can you believe it? Only in a wonderland like SL we see these. Poor people have to bear all these.

Domestic minimum requirement for one-person consumption of monthly water-charge is already greater than minimum required one-person consumption of electricity-charge. This can never be when considering the capital and recurtent costs per unit to produce water and electricity taken apart. What is the percentage portion of electricity cost to pump the unit of water? Why water tariff is not increased when fuel price goes up? Well and river water purified by the people themselves will be the ANSWER! that is available to village people here more than any other country.

Water supply was free of charge in the sixties, now every year, water tarrif being increased year in and year out mismanagement , corruption, wattage, over staff etc; were the causes for tarrif on water to be increased.
