- Ranil says Sajith and Anura failed to take leadership in 2022. All they did was give excuses
- If I win I will implement the Puluwan Sri Lanka proposals from the very next day
- I am building a strong Sri Lanka for the youth
- IMF terms and conditions cannot be changed. If Sajith and Anura are saying they can, they are talking rot
As the candidates enter the final week of campaigning ahead of the September 21 Presidential Election, Independent candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe said his government had set a 10 year phase to get the country entirely out of the economic crisis and if it breaks at any time, there will be no recovery.
"Look I am coming here to win. But we have a 10-year phase and I will not be there all the time. If it breaks at any time there is no recovery," Wickremesinghe said in an interview with Daily Mirror. While maintaining that he was confident to win Saturday's Presidential Election, Wickremesinghe said that his opponents - Sajith Premadasa and Anura Kumara Dissanayake could compete with him as it was a democratic country but questioned why they failed to take leadership in 2022 when the country faced its worst ever crisis. "They have to tell us what they did two years ago," Wickremesinghe said. "Both of them had a chance. Both of them had the opportunity to come and take over. No one did. They gave reasons. Then I asked them to join me. They did not join me either. So they cannot say they were not asked," Wickremesinghe said.
Commenting on Premadasa and Dissanayake's comments that they would renegotiate the terms and conditions with the IMF if they win the presidency, Wickremesinghe said this was not possible. "Why don't they ask the IMF now and come back with a reply that they can do it. They cannot do it. They are only talking rot," he said.
Speaking of his immediate plans if he wins the Presidency, Wickremesinghe said that from the very next day after his victory he will implement the Puluwan Sri Lanka manifesto. He said he and the next government would build a strong Sri Lanka especially for the youth and he encouraged those who left the country following the 2022 crisis, to return to help develop the country. "I might not be around by 2048 but at the moment getting the economy moving and creating more income opportunities and improving education is very vital. And for those getting married, we need to have housing in different areas. So as the country improves it is the youth that will benefit," Wickremesinghe said.
The President further said that if he succeeds the Presidential Election, he will begin work from the very next day.

Citizens Must Weigh The Consequences Of Their Vote Monday, 16 September 2024 06:53 PM
Absolutely. He’s behaving similarly what UK’s Rishi Sunak did before their elections. Over 14years, their party ruled UK, had a few leadership changes and was very confidently throwing election incentives before their recent elections. However, the public didn’t take the bait bcoz of various challenges all were facing. Now, the new Labour party has uncovered many areas of over spending (one was previous PM taking too many Helicopter rides) and few other concerns too. They are taking drastic measures now to cut down on expenses of the previous government coz new Finance Minister says UK can’t sustain these kind of expenditures. Same goes to SL, if current regime stays, more loans taken to maintain their high expenditures and corruption of some of the politicians. Opposition parties have assured spending cuts, downsizing at all levels of government, investigations of corruption etc. Therefore, over to you the Citizens of SL to decide who is the right candidate to make SL “Great Again”!

As if Ranil could not do it in over 30 years in the parliament as Cabinet Minister, PM and President what is the assurance he can do it in 10 years? He has been a liar and a white-collar rogue in the past and will always be. Look at those who are around him including all the kapam karayos, central bank robbers, ministers who asked for bribes from an embassy, paga kings etc. They are the ones who will be in the cabinet if Ranil wins. Kick Ranil Out!

You will definitely be not around the political scene of this country from 22 September 2024. Both Sajith and Anura did not accept the leadership of the country in July 2022 because it was in such a mess and there was anarchy all over. Who would like to accept a country in such a state, except through a popular mandate. What you have done at best, is to postpone the repayment of our debts passing the burden onto coming generations. Furthermore, you have let your stooges enjoy the good life at the expense of the poor people of Sri Lanka who are still struggling desperately to make ends meet. People are about to speak, and speak they will.

RW was a never ever popular person. He just rotten and useless political leader no vision. Its clear who ever around with him are already politically bankrupt. People will never trust him. Ok, what was the alternative action other than delaying the repayment? These loans were mainly obtained during Yahapalana by Sira and Ranil to buy consumer goods. You guys enjoyed that. Rajapakshas obtained loans but built infrastructure which can be used for a long time. Both parties made money that is true. But subversives created more damage than these commissions which many ignore now.

Even though Anura and Sajith didn't join you two years ago, why wasn’t 'Puluwan' implemented back then? Now, just before the elections, you’re making grand promises again. NPP is our hope Monday, 16 September 2024 10:12 AM
@ Where is your Wi-Fi - have you forgotten the economic context two years ago? People dying in queues to get the essentials, 13 hours of power cuts, ships docked in the Colombo port unable unload cargo due to lack of FOREX to pay suppliers, etc. First, Hon Ranil Wickramasinghe had to stabilise the economy, which was plummeting down. This initial target has been achieved thanks to the IMF framework. Now the second phase is implementing the provisions of Puluwan Sri Lanka. Why didn't the NPP assume the responsibility and reviewed the economy in 2022? The leader of the NPP's presidency dream will come to an abrupt end on the 22 of September.

What have you really initiated by yourself for the benefit of the country during your political career. The result was very clear at the last General election. If not for the proportionate system, your party would have been history, worse having been in power yourself at that time. You only wanted to be the leader always, nothing else. That's what you want even today. You were forced to approach the IMF and the rest is history. Actually, do you have a vision for the country? We doubt it. Guess its time to pack up - and this time for good.

Mr President what you say is true but your erstwhile deputy too who is young and has capabilities to continue the IMF program to fullfill the stated objective with innovative changes to boost the economy of the country as the team with him will definitely get the country out of the rut it is in as they are well focussed on a vision and mission. As you are ageing life is uncertain, surely the politicians who are with you down the line wll bring down the economy in case of your absence. Whilst you have excellent leadership qualities you can contribute towards this change as you have skills in mentoring them by being a trouble shooter the only thing is that Sajith should be gracious enough to forget the past and take you on board after this election to this end afterall instead of feeling it is infradig to accept a position, you have achieved your dream of being President of this country which is written in the annals of history.!!!!!

Citizens Have Lost Trust In You After The Sudden U- Turn Monday, 16 September 2024 08:53 AM
We can’t believe what you are saying anymore after the sudden slew of changes you implemented or trying to implement recently. Initially saying due to IMF conditions, unable to change the drastic measures taken to get the IMF loans and repayment extension. Citizens went on strike, people suffered further and still suffering from the consequences of these measures. SUDDENLY IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS, ABLE TO AMEND THESE DRASTIC MEASURES YOU GAZETTED. Repaying those loans will be an ongoing exercise for the next 20 to 40 years. At the rate you and your fellow so called politicians spend, may go on further for another 60 to 80 years. Therefore, you have lost the trust of the people and Sajith or AKD will definitely work out a reasonable proposal to move the country forward with a younger team of professionals. The current team doesn’t have the mandate of the citizens any longer.

Dear Sir, let me first salute you for being the most outstanding president Sri Lanka had since independence. A handful of people scoff at the idea of a developed nation by 2048. This shows how narrow-minded these people are. If our great kings thought that they would not be around in the year 2000 and why build massive infrastructure, would we have, for example, the cascade system that irrigates thousands of hectares even today? If the Japanese leaders thought the same after the end of the world war, where Japan was pulverised and quelled, would Japan achieve this level of development and technological advancement that they enjoy today? If the founding fathers of the US thought in the same vein, would the US become an economic powerhouse within less than 300 years? Though a minority has such a low level of thinking, the silent majority venerates you. Have no qualms, sir. You will emerge as the president of this nation on 22, after the first count!

Ranil, before you go on further fear mongering as a last-ditch attempt to save yourself just ask yourself who put Sri Lanka in this economic mess in the first place. Look at a mirror and you will get the answer. If providing the country, the basic essentials such as power and energy by not paying back the loans you yourself took is the 10-year phase you are talking about as your greatest achievement, that story is only good for the gullible. Times have changed, and most voters are not that that ignorant anymore. There are much better Sri Lankans than you in this country and outside it who are far more capable of managing economic revival and pull us out of the crisis you caused. Please leave it to them and stop crying wolf!

Well presented, absolutely correct. This man should have stayed retired, the R’s brought him to save their skin. After the Gota debacle, SL had the opportunity to start a quick rebuild, as the masses were ready for it. That opportunity was lost by this selfish opportunist acting like a dictator on the one hand, insulting the judiciary and openly allowing corruption and on the other hand sucking up to the west and IMF. In the end the poor people of SL were the losers. A Historical Disaster indeed.

The fundamental flaw in Srilankan politics since independence. The first thing they did immeadiately after independence is to defranchise the so called Indian Tamils. Even though they contributed for nearly half of the then GDP. Galoya (Pattipalai Aaru_ changed to Gal Oya)project was commissioned. People, mainly Tamils were removed to pave way for people from other areas ( Sinhalese )were brought and given land. Followed by Sinhala only in 1956. Then came 1958 communal riots..followed by more riots in 1961,1971,1981. Then came the state sponcered communal riots in 77 culminated by the 83 riots. Standardisation and the 77 riots forced the Tamils ( the youth) to loose confidence in their own leaders and paved way for the militant groups. 83 riots fueled the growth of the militant group. Then India was not happy with JR so brought in IPKF. downfall of SriLanka from the best performing ecconomy in southeast asia at independence to the worst performing economy. Two nations needed in S

I cannot share the euphoria that keeps cropping up in the comments that everything will be fine or at least better!!! Are the two top politicians (!!!???) Anura Kumara and Sajith mentioned above a priori equipped with more qualified leadership skills than Ranil!? Nothing in the behavior of AKD and Sajith to date suggests this!!! They only reveal mediocrity in their behavior, nothing that indicates any exceptional personality traits or qualities!!! And the political programs they offer are often unspecific and questionable in content!!! I just hope, for the majority of the suffering people, that the euphoria and optimism shown by many people now does not soon turn out to be a grandiose illusion and followed disappointment !!!

Downfall of SriLanka from the best performing ecconomy in southeast asia at independence to the worst performing economy and the main, if not the single reason for this is the policy of "discriminate the minorities at any cost." You can't blame the politicians for this. Whenever they came up with anti minority slogans the majority people liked it and voted for them.. It was the easy way out for the politicians. So dont blame the Politicians. Blame yourself.

Anyway with 6-12 months after the election, we will know if we will have abundance or famine. If our worldly possessions will become a property of the state or not. Honestly hope, we don't have another episode akin to 2022.

Oh ! This Man Ranil Wickremesinghe ! On the one hand he must be acknowledged to be a master manipulator who did a fantastic job for himself holding onto the never-to-be windfall - the presidency that fell on his lap. For holding onto this 'gift' this long with blessings of all those no shame no-principle MPs. who shamelessly crossed over and supported every single move, draconian laws he imposed on the publlic or tried doing so. On the other hand he is by far one of the most hated, criticized, and failed politicians Sri Lanka saw surpassing even his uncle, the chief architect of the curse that befell Sri Lanka since 1977. RW is losing his mind when he says, 2048, 10 years and so on, timeframes he quotes he will resurect the country that he and his cohorts dragged in to. No thank you Sir, please settle down in the sunset of your life and let the thousands of ordinary, capable, honest citizens who will resurrect this country minus thuggery, corruption, nepotism and despair.

It’s time for him to mature and recognize both his strengths and weaknesses. In the end, he’s only deceiving himself.

You and your IMF. You say the rules cannot be changed but you can make election pledges of increasing salaries reducing taxers increasing pensions. Are you the only person who can a run a country and there is no one else. It you people who ruined and brought it bankruptcy so it is you duty to take it out of this mess.
