- Danushka will reside in a Sri Lankan family's house in Sydney
- A mysterious Sri Lankan female residing in Melbourne pays Danushka's bail money
- Several wealthy Sri Lankans volunteer to look after the cricketer in Australia
Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka who was granted bail under strict conditions by a Magistrate Court in Sydney yesterday will reside in a wealthy Sri Lankan citizen's house as he will have to provide an immediate local address to the Australian Police, the Daily Mirror learns.
As the bail was granted under strict conditions including a surety of Australian 150,000 dollars, sources said that a mysterious Sri Lankan female who is residing in Melbourne had immediately submitted the full amount of cash to get bail for the cricketer. The connection the cricketer has to this female or whether she is simply a fan is yet to be disclosed.
As the case was taken up yesterday several wealthy Sri Lankans living in Sydney had come forward to offer accommodation to Danushka and to look after his expenses during the duration of his stay. Those residing in Melbourne had also pitched in to look after the national cricketer.
For now, Sri Lankan Cricket will not have any expenses to bear on the accommodation of the cricketer due to the several volunteers who have come forward to look after him but they will continue paying his legal costs.
His case will be called again on January 12.
Danushka Gunathilaka who is facing four charges of sexual assault in Sydney was granted bail yesterday with a $150,000 surety and various conditions, including Danushka not using Tinder or any other dating apps. He’s also prevented from accessing his existing social media accounts unless in the company of his legal team.
Other conditions also include reporting to the police daily, a curfew imposed on him from 9 pm to 6 am and not contacting the complainant. (JAMILA HUSAIN)

If not for the corrupt and dishonest, stealing politicians and leaders in SL, the Sri Lankans living abroad would have definitely bailed out the country as well from its economic crisis. They have no faith in the existing system presently. Despite Danushka's fault the SL community is still charitable.

Must be birds of the same feather Friday, 18 November 2022 07:24 AM
Reflects exactly what I stated in an earlier comment. It sounds like all these volunteers are condoning his act. Wonder if an ordinary SL falls into a similar predicament if any of these volunteers would come forward. I am sure the rest of the team must be regretting for missing on an all expenses paid extended holiday in Australia, possibly with more amiable adventures.

Watch your comments, because even Danushka can be a potential convicted, but not yet convicted. This is applicable to every civilian who can be accusedas. The laws around the world have opened doors where anyone can accuse anyone.

Srilankans are good when it comes to assisting criminals. So this is hardly surprising. We did elect thieves and murderers in the previous election. It seems changing the country changes nothing. Ashamed to be a Sri Lankan.

There are plenty here who waste much on religious places, and Thera who go around in donated V8. Those wrong doing against society must be fought against first. Theras again trying to get greater subsidy for their electricity while CEB is continuing to make losses. There is far worse happening here broadly.

See ,those living abroad are coming together when one if their own is in trouble. They know that there are two sides to this story and only one side is being heard now, while our guy has been given big publicity, the female is not even identified. Whatever happened has happened, one fact was clear, the laws in those countries are so complicated, in this case, the consent has to be there during the completion period of the act. At any time one party can say no and from thst moment, it is considered no longer consensul. But proving this in a court of law would be difficult and good defense lawyer can really defend the case.

Wealthy Sri Lankans? There are no so called too many wealthy Sri Lankans in Australia, no more than in other places. Vast majority are paying off mortgages and for their cars as, unlike in SL, people can't earn money via corrupt means and bribes. Almost all of them are living comfortably of course and I am not sure you can call them that much wealthy. They certainly can look after a person for some time.

If all these wealthy people contribute or help poor people in srilanka during these days, I would have thought it would have been better !!! I know people are reluctant to give it to the government , but please be more thoughtful and help at least a poor family rather than an unscrupulous person with very bad motives and bad desires. Others have a desire to live!!! and feed their children. Well if they had already done it great!!!

First and foremost I thank the defence barrister Mr.Murugan Thangaraj for getting DG out on Bail !!! However, I still believe in order to win the case against complainant, DG should be defended by female lawyer at trial, yeah!! Only a female lawyer can ask certain awkward questions when complainant put to witness stand !! That's how female lawyers have won mega sexual assault cases!! Most recently, Hollywood actor Johnny Depp was successfully defended by his lawyer Camille Vasquez, More importantly the lawyer won the defermation Case AGAINST the former spouse!! Huh!!

This is sad fact pertaining to those Sri Lankans living Downunder because most of them have carried Sri Lankan baggage with them unfortunately. On the other hand true blue Aussies would distance themselves from such people with similar historical criminal background. Some Sri Lanka associations are no good either, as those who could not make a mark back in Sri Lanka would resort to any cheap act to get famous. Women are the worst !

First, do the better thing for next time, and go against any general donation drive to Sri Lanka. Otherwise, all you've done is continue the cycle of corruption of Mihinda. I'm sure the Rajapaksa with dual citizenship are the better persons compared to ones with only corrupt citizenship (Mahinda, Chamal and Mahnida son). Second, FYI if you are interested in welfare of poor children, then there are avenue to direct sponsor child, where scheme is run by international NGO. They name and give address of child so you can even correspond in letters with a child in Sri Lanka to make sure your money is well purposed by the child's family.

Australian sub site of Dailymail .co .uk has article saying "The $150,000 surety was supplied by a Melbourne woman known as Ms De Silva." The Sri Lankan journalist is only sourcing from Australian site as mentioned and perhaps also www .smh .com .au.

In Melbourne, Victoria there are many Sri Lankan engaged in illegal activity. One example they buy cars condemned from accident to be unsafe and then fix in outside re-register them in other State, or export the car. The car is course has internal structure damage to metal below safety standard but outward looks good after the repairs. The Sri Lankans are now doing what the lebs, and other criminals. Sometimes Sri Lankan born mechanic in Melbourne will, reset internal computer of car, which identifies serious fault, so car can be sold by trickster. Repair shop with Australian grown up man don't do that, but overseas come there as adults are generally unethical and will do anything for money.

There is woman born in Sri Lanka who is in Australian Parliament now. The man who contested against her in the seat at the last Australian election was also born in Sri Lanka. While there are a fair number of decent Sri Lankan, generally those born in Sri Lanka are unethical, and some do criminal activity. Second generation Sri Lankan in Melbourne are far more decent, and less inclined towards unethical behaviour. I try to avoid being in contact with any person who recently come to Melbourne from Sri Lanka, because of their tendency toward deviousness toward society in general.

In my opinion, DG will be found 'not guilty'. The burden of proof is 'beyond reasonable doubt' and in this case, it will boil down to which side has the more convincing arguments. The police say she invited him for a drink, pizza, and to go back to her residence. It will be incredibly hard for the accused's lawyers to mount a convincing argument- they will have to prove she didn't give consent. 99% probability he will get off. Note- 'not guilty' doesn't mean 'innocent'- it just means the accused couldn't prove it. Nobody wins here, either way.
