Colombo, December 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Western Province Education Zonal Ministry has issued a circular prohibiting private tutoring classes for students by school teachers.
The circular, issued by Western Province Education Secretary K.A.D.R. Nishanthi Jayasinghe, restricts school teachers from conducting private tutoring classes for their students during school hours, after school, on weekends or during government holidays in exchange for money.
It further said that complaints had been received regarding undue pressure exerted on students who do not attend their teachers' private classes.
As per circular 2006/45, the Western Province Education Zonal Ministry has officially banned such practices. The circular also emphasised the need to enforce similar measures in other provinces, following numerous complaints from districts in the North-Central, North-Western, Uva and Central Provinces.
The circular advised school administrations to obtain written certification from all teachers acknowledging their awareness of the directive. Principals were instructed to report any violations to the respective Zonal Education Directors, who are authorised to take strict disciplinary action against teachers failing to comply with the guidelines.
