Wickramaratne can function as acting IGP: Speaker

C.D. Wickramaratne can function as acting IGP continuously till the end of the month until a new IGP is appointed, Parliament was informed today.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene came up with this remark when Jathika Jana Balawegaya leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake queried about the situation with regard to the situation that had arisen after the Constitutional Council had rejected the extension granted to Wickramaratne by the President.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene also confirmed that there is no issue pertaining to the appointment of an IGP as the President can re-nominate him even though the Constitutional Council had rejected the previous appointment.

MP Dissanayake who responded, argued that the Constitutional Council is of no use if the President can make an appointment while ignoring it.

Opposition MP Udaya Gammanpila who joined in the cross talk requested the Speaker and Prime Minister to clarify the reports that said the Constitutional Council has rejected the extension granted to Wickramaratne in order to defend a drug trafficker.

The Prime Minister who responded said the government has already embarked on bringing in legislation to prevent the publishing of fake news. (Yohan Perera)
