Colombo, September 17 (Daily Mirror)- National People’s Power (NPP) presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake urged people to vote for him to form a government free of fraud, corruption and misuse.
He told the daily Mirror that NPP will create political stability soon after coming to power and that the programme to develop the economy will be implemented step by step afterwards.
Dissanayake said the NPP is taking power on September 21 to move forward the country for a transformation of a new era.
Meanwhile speaking at a rally in Ruwanwella, he said the current economic crisis was created by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa only became the victim of the crisis created by Wickremesinghe.
He said Sri Lanka has obtained USD 15.5 billion from the International Sovereign Bonds (ISB) and that only USD 3 billion was obtained during the Mahinda Rajapaksa era and that the rest of USD 12.5 billion was obtained during the Ranil Wickremesinghe's Good Governance government of four years in 2015.
"Sri Lanka has already settled the USD 3 billion obtained during Rajapaksa's term. Sri Lanka is still to pay USD 12.5 billion ISBs obtained during Ranil Wickremesinghe's term in 2015. Sri Lanka's Dollar reserve depleted after failing to settle that loan. No international institutions provided us loans afterwards and our reserves depleted. So, then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to spend the Dollar reserves in the Central Bank and those reserves also ran out. Then, we were unable to procure fuel and gas creating fuel and gas shortage which resulted in the power outage. That is how the economic crisis emerged. Gotabaya only became the victim of the crisis created by Ranil Wickremesinghe," he said.
Dissanayake said after Ranil Wickremesinghe took office following Gotabaya's removal, only what Ranil did was to stop paying loans and procured fuel and gas with the Dollars saved due to non-payment of loans.

Are Sri Lankans really so gullible and ignorant to vote for a communist? Do you read the worldnews at all? Did you ever hear about dictatorial regimes like Venezuela,Cuba,China,Belarus,Russia etc?Putin has a billiondollar mansion at the Black Sea while the poor Russians are suffering and losing their sons because of this megalomaniac warlord. Western Europe was very fortuned to be liberated from the nazis by Canada,Britain and USA instead of liberated by Russia. Just look at the difference between Eastern Europe and Western Europe

So you feel an inexperienced team of NPP can sway away from Marxist Leninist Socialism to a neo liberal free market economy overnight as till the election came they were against IMF and all other contemporary liberal ideas. Changing spots overnight ?

Anura and free market - a very sudden change to win votes. All this time they were Maxist Leninist with famous five lessons and Marxist–Leninists reject anarchism, left communism, currents of DEMOCRATIC socialism, reformist socialism, and SOCIAL DEMOCRACY. They oppose fascism, liberal democracy, and imperialism. Beware of changes suddenly to win votes.

Really appalled by your ignorance. Communism does not exist in the world any more. Please refer to a dictionary to find the meaning of Communism. The only other person I know of who uses the term is Donald Trump, to scare voters. 'Communism' is only a bad word today. Your knowledge of recent world history is bewildering. Comment about the facts if you need to vent your anger.

Sorry to burst your "democratic" bubble but, communism DOES exist and worse still, it is alive and well in so-called Western countries ... it is subtle and quiet to the point where you don't know that you are under its spell. And thanks to the powers that these government grabbed during and post the covid 19 lockdowns and citizen controls. Yep. That's the 21st century global governance for you.

Very true. The big difference between Europeans and Sri Lankans is the quality and amount of education. They will believe all simple promises and fairytales and don't read the critical newspapers but only the tabloids and believe the man with the most simple solutions. Because they are simple themselves.

U people think only western are intelligent. We will show our intelligence based on our country's prosperity.

How do you say that AKD follows the communist principles. Apparently your statement is baseless. Srilanka has been engulfed by the corruption and fraud. Since the independence the leaders who governed this country made it jeopardised for their own wealth. If the leaders are governing the country in a satisfactory manner nobody wants to panic. Don’t compare Sri Lanka with the countries like Venezuela and Cuba they have a different political landscape. Luckily those countries have not been either bankrupted or defaulted. Therefore as we assume that certain jealous morons who dislike the success of this country may make baseless allegations so as to hinder the victory of the NPP

Stupid and ignorant, I have no idea what you are talking about. Russia does not follow socialism, and neither does China, if they do, they can't have such huge market-driven economies. Socialism is dead long ago, and modern capitalism or state capitalisms have attributes of both capitalism and socialism, look at Scandinavia, China they are good examples. After all, a bit of history: Russians fought against Naziz, and many believe Russians did the majority of the hard work, not Western allies. Just google the history of WWII. I don't live in SL, so I know how Western economies work. I started listening to AKD's speeches recently, and all that I tell is he is not a socialist or communist. He sounds very capitalist; he is talking about a market-driven economy, developing the private sector, reducing big government and its spending, cutting down corruption, investing in R

Your information and argument does not mean we can vote for any of the other 3 candidates Ranil or Sajith or Namal as their track record and background can never justify a vote. In the current circumstances, we have to give a vote to Anura and see if he performs. In the meantime, somebody can check why Yahapalana took such a big borrowing of 12.5 Billion ISB and fact check this. Was it creating projects to make commissions or genuine projects.

Mate issue is majority of our so called educated citizens and government servants are the biggest irresponsible lot. They want free stuff and vote for leftists and Marxists. This country is going backward since 1994 as above sector foolishly voted useless leftists and Marxists leaders with useless teams. I think the whole government sector should collapse, if you really want to bring this country out of woods. With 1.5m goverment sector servants this country always heads in the wrong direction. If Anura wins, this will worsen further more.

AKD is not the man for the moment. They will just transfer power from the president to the politburo. The avg man will become even more poorer.

communism "a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs." Neither AKD nor the NPP are even on the same book! For that matter there are no countries like the above in the world today. It is non sustainable.

Sri Lankans usually short thinking, gullible people. The apparent “Malima ralla” is just a sekewed public opinion based on lies, hatred and jealousy by politicians like AKD. But there is a silent majority of discernible people in Sri Lanka. For them there is only one candidate who does not base his political campaign on hatred, lies, and negative thinking - that is Sanjith- the first Sri Lankan presidential candidate ever repressing the whole nation.

You were given an opportunity after the aragalya and should have taken that opportunity and done what you are saying now. If you have taken the opportunity and did, then you would have won the election in landslide. Instead wanted your conditions which you new it would never happened. You may win but will not have sufficient votes to form your own government.

DK Wednesday, 18 September 2024 02:21 AM
For the records Sri Lanka has been running budget deficits ie; spending more than what it could afford since post independence, thus amassing a debt mountain over this period. Lack of proper macro economic policies and other factors such as giving out free handouts to citizens and the deliberate bloating the non income generating bureaucracy both as means to buy votes, JVP insurrections - not one but two, and the ruinous civil war that spanned more than three decades all of these cumulatively made the built up debt unserviceable. So, AKD before pointing the finger at RW should realise that they, namely the JVP, too had a hand in brining about the economic mess that SL finds itself in. In other words this lot are no angels, they are as bad as the rest.

Exactly can you tell us how you became the 8th richest person in Sri Lanka? Your father was a poor labourer and your mum was a home maker, if so where did you get all this wealth? Perhaps from the moon? Don't expect us to believe you are Mahathma Gandhi or the one time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu K. Kamaraj. Money flow via your pockets too. Hence do not preach to the converted about how dishonest politicians are in Sri Lanka.

Obviously the government should be corruption free but Anura has created this massive myth that all our problems will be solved if they come to power. As much as corruption and fraud impacted on our economy, the resistance, strikes and violence of the JVP in the past contributed to this situation. Every time the government tries to take some progressive steps these JVPers had resisted. I am personally aware of the Bheshanaya days in 87 to 89! This is party that thrived on each crisis to achieve their goals and the recent economic crisis is no different!

This will be a watershed moment in SL political landscape. It will be now or never. It is time to have a change and start a new begging. NPP has a chance to show people that they are ready to embrace the new world, move away from communism, encourage private sector and foreign investment, reform the education system, remove reliance on government for everything, get rid of government red tape, completely eradicate corruption, stop politicians putting people into non existant jobs. The list is so long. If you start doing the same things like those who ruled the country previously, good luck to SL. Stay as a developing nation for the next thousand years.

It is hilarious to read some comments, most people either don't know what socialism vs capitalism or they never listened to AKD speeches. To be honest, I'm very surprised by the economic and social policies announced by AKD; they are in no way near socialism rather very much modern capitalist policies. From small government, market-driven economy, building good human capital, IT and tourism to develop further to get more foreign currencies are very much capitalist policies, no way socialist policies.

All four of the repeatedly mentioned presidential candidates promise "Sri Lanka is heaven on earth" (!) !!! All of them are great prophets of salvation with their proclamation of the good news that the worst negative developments, especially in the economy, will be eliminated and corruption will be "abolished"! Anura Kumara is already proclaiming the radical renewal of society and is drawing a "new era" on the horizon !!! Whether all of this can be achieved with his economic model, which is by no means that of the social market economy, remains to be seen in the next two years! We will see how many large companies will invest in his economic model and how quickly things will improve for the people! I hope that Sir Raimund Popper will not be right in the end with his statement: "the (socialist) attempt to create heaven on earth always produced hell" !!!
