Will nearly 800 doctors listed to go abroad, return?
A total of 785 doctors who have completed Doctor of Medicine (MD) are pegged to leave for foreign training in the coming months, Daily Mirror learns.
It has triggered concerns whether they will return in the current context after completion of their training to be consultants.
According to reliable sources, a total of 822 doctors are currently undergoing training in foreign countries while 632 are preparing for the MD exam.
A senior health official told Daily Mirror that it is highly unlikely that all 822 doctors will be returning, given the situation in the country.
However, plans are afoot to take steps to retain the existing doctors and medical specialists.
According to the Ministry of Health, in 2022, Sri Lanka had approximately 20,000 serving doctors and around 2,800 consultants. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

If you want them to come back, restructure the health ministry. Firstly, the criminal minister should face justice for homicide of innocent civilians including children. This would be 1st degree murder because it is an result of financial gain

They studied from public money. Obtained salaries from public money until the country bankrupted. Going abroad for a comfortable life. They will come back to country once the country recovered. Continue the rest of life again with obtaining salaries from public money. Any ethics?

Only the best who succeeded by their own way in A level got to be doctors. You make out doctors are like those who take up vocational education. You make all those who want to study sound like they are bad. Only best A level students get into best courses. Unless government want to give 3rd rate students into medicine, best A level mark getting students will always choose better country that live in a hell hole. Your talking about public money cost of doctors it is obvious you did not get into top degree at top university.

Did not you consume public money? Many people accuse doctors because they are jealous of doctors. But when they fall sick they behave like innocent puppies, and forget everything after getting well and start spreading jealousy again

It speaks volumes about the quality of doctors that have left the country for further training overseas. Which means the doctors that pass out at our universities are not qualified enough to work at our local hospitals as Consultants .I remember there was a time when Sri Lankan doctors were very much in demand in countries like Australia and Canada. It seems that our standards have deteriorated to such an extent that they are sent overseas for further training.

If Sri Lankan medical standards are in par with the western world, there is no need for the doctors to go for further training. Thus the medical schools should upgrade its training. It’s a disgrace to beg other countries to further train and give further experience to our doctors.

All these so-called “Doctors” are on the basis of being judged under “STANDARDISATION AND DISTRICT Quota (SDQ) basis!! Therefore, NOT based on ‘ALL ISLAND MERIT’ basis!!! Therefore the presumption SL MBBS constitutes of BEST entrants is FALSE, or IMPROPRIETY!!!?? Falsifying education quality SINCE 1971 for 52 years!! INEPT

They will never return if they get employment/right to practice medicine. In Australia all doctors must sit for Aus exams. Overseas work is good money

Dad, why have you got to work in a foreign country? Because a president without a mandate is ruling this country with a few thieves, the professional has no future in this country. Neither this country nor our children can see a future. That's why I have to go to a foreign country, my daughter. I will come back when a clean political party with no hidden agenda takes over the country after the elections. I'm sure it will happen within a year from now.

Doctors are part of the brain drain. A very vocal (and flippant) pohottuwa MP claims they leave looking for better living standards and high salaries. More pressing reason is their loss of any hope for the future of their children alongside their inability to do anything about the corruption, waste and ineptitude of the ghostly arm that manouevre such.

That means SL doctors are not really qualified from local medical schools. Everyone in SL criticises Western countries for everything, but then accepts SL education standards are crap, they have to go overseas for real training. I know first hand doctors in Western countries and how they deal with patients and everything. SL doctors are no match. Even if they go there, they will need to pass local medical exams if they want to work. It is no joke.

Review the Transfer system for doctors I don't think Australian doctors get transferred like here, probably the case for other countries as well..Also development is Colombo based with limited facilities in regions compelling everyone to come to Colombo

Foreign training means pulic money, let say if one goes to England, they receive nealy 2100 sterling pounds living expenses per month plus their local monthly salary. See how much for a year. When they train there they find NHS job and vacate post here. That the common practice

Most of these Doctors could get employment in the UK or in the MiddleEast. . In other countries it is difficult as they need to go through a rigorous process. It is better to be in Sri Lanka in that case. Remaining doctors in Sri Lanka will be able to multiply their earnings through private practice taking advantage of the shortage.

If I was a doctor I'd leave the risks od treating patients with potentially fatal medicines could result in doctor being pursued for malpractice or incompetence, ministers will always pass blame to others so why stay in sl for a poor salary, barely any human rights, no freedom of speech, corruption everywhere, why would yoy want to raise q family here? Everything in sl has been perverted to benefit politicians and their goons, deaths resulting in lack of doctors should be on politicians heads

Chances are they wont get jobs as doctors right away. They might opt to work as hospital attendants just to stay there. Or much lesser jobs. Mark time and earn some money.

Reading comments of uneducated pandits is funny, I feel... it s very funny when some body assumes things and comments as if he knows the facts when he really does not know... doctors of SL don't have to do attendant jobs even though u like and wish them to do. It is not hard to pass either AMC( for Aussie practice), or PLAB/UKMLA (for UK) to become a doctor there. I feel happy that I left ungrateful, jealous low quality people like you who accuse, but not produce any thing for the country... I visit SL at least 3 times per year and treat the people in rural areas and donate as much as I can. I know some other colleagues of the same calibre who do the same to help the poor . We don't advertise on those, but help as much as we can to boost the poor. I won't tell these usually in public, but felt like telling it here because some people may mislead you...cheers

Stop the brain drain. This is the most common cry in Sri Lanka today. But how? The simple answer/solution is: if you have been educated using public funds and facilities then you are FINANCIALLY bound to work here for at least two years and give back to the government and the people who funded your education and training for 5 years, before you seek overseas employment. Forget ethics. Sri Lanka has ditched ethics years ago. It should be the LAW.

There are two types here. Doctors who have been sent for foreign training by the government. They need to repay the bond. But the rule of law does not apply to the elites in Sri Lanka. The others who are leaving on their own accord. It's their human right.

What happened to the world beating Ayurvedha treatments? Where are the SL nationalists and traditionalists who always criticise everything to do with Western systems. But almost all parents in SL want their children to study Western medicine. Also where are religious fanatics and those who believe in superstitions? Can't these groups cure sick people? What about offerings to the devil and sacrifice a hen? Why need Western trained doctors?

It is such a selfish society how can you live here, just for a few, never the society. Only money talks, erosion of values, must be one of the most status conscious societies in the world where might is right Doctors and other professionals leaving that's only a symptom of a deeper illness where educated people don't see it as a place to live and prosper
