MP Wimal Weerawansa called off the eight day hunger strike he was engaged in amidst the chanting of pirith a short while ago, National Freedom Front (NFF) sources said.
The MP had decided to give up his fast after requests made by Venerable Theras of the Malwathu and Asgiri chapters and fellow politicians, it is learnt. He ended the fast by drinking a cup of milk.
The parliamentarian commenced a hunger strike on March 22 against alleged political revenge perpetrated by the government against him. He was admitted to the prison hospital on March 26 (Sunday) and was transferred to the National Hospital yesterday.
Weerawansa was remanded for allegedly misusing 40 state vehicles belonging to the State Engineering Corporation causing a loss of Rs. 90 million. Bail applications to release him were refused by the courts. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

What a strange country is this, even in a political cheap drama the monks are getting involved like it is religious even and blessing the criminal. I am so sick and no respect at all for these monks who involve in dirty politics.

This a good lesson for the govt. It should not bow down to unfair demand by way of strikes or protests. Hope the Govt will follow the same principle against GMOA in the upcoming strikes next week...

Is our legal system so weak? If every criminal start doing this, they'll be out of prison. WW must be sent back to prison hospital, not national hospital. I'm feeling sick looking at the state of affairs of our country.........so pathetic.

The authorities should promptly settle this case and find out whether he is guilty or not. He should not be kept in remand for a long time, In other words authorities should put up or shut up.
