Woman to be summoned before Privileges Committee over social media post

Parliament, April 1 (Dailyb Mirror)- A person is to be summoned before the Commitee on Privileges for a post uploaded on social media criticising an MP.

This eventuality is first of its kind in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, Lalanthi Perera of Kalutara will be summoned for her post which called MP Rohitha Abeygunawarde and IGP Deshabandu Tennekoon rogues, according to the announcement by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

But that is correct. Rohitha Abeygunawardana is a proletarian, uneducated and corrupt crook and Tennakoon is a convicted torturer and well-connected with drug lords who are protected by politicians and him. It is a scandal that this woman has to answer for her statements, which are covered by freedom of expression. This will again cause a national and international outcry among human rights activists. Sri Lanka's reputation continues to be damaged because criminal politicians do not want their misdeeds to be exposed.

Social media is a tool. Use it wisely. People don't realize the damage it can do to someone. Even if it is a politician being called out, or your worst enemy, there needs to be a line that you should not cross based on your personal opinion. This is one example.

@M Fernando that's the point. An opinion can be baseless, without knowledge and be factually inaccurate. Whether someone is good or bad, an "opinion" can lead them to be vilified in society. That's the danger of using social media to recklessly call out people you don't personally know. In this case unless these people in power are personally known to her, she should not publicize her personal opinion.

If you can stand by way of substantial evidence to back the posts then nothing to fear. But to hide behind a screen and make generic statements, just because others happen to utter it, or make a post out of mallice or hatred, then you are accountable for your actions! That is democracy.
