Woman, two children die in train accident

Arachchikattuwa, Feb 19 (Daily Mirror) - A woman and two children riding on a motorcycle were killed in an accident when a train travelling from Puttalam towards Chilaw collided with the motorcycle at a railway crossing in Arachchikattuwa.

Police said the deceased woman is 36 years old and her 7-year old daughter and 9-year old boy died in the accident.

It has been revealed that they met with this accident while on thier way to attend a tuition class.

The bodies have been sent to the Mundalama Hospital and the Arachchikattuwa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Motor cyclists and three wheelers are always trying to beat the train. They have no patience. They also do not wait for their turn in a queue and they go to the front overtaking all other vehicles patiently waiting in the que. Install CCTV at trsin crossings and issue fines for these offenders.

Never ending accidents at the railway crossing. Very sad but uncivilized Sri Lankans are the cause for many of the social evil in our country. Motor bikes and Trishaws should be banned as a mode of transport.

At this level crossing and many others throughout the coastal region the warning signals are always on, to such an extent that people simply ignore them. In spite of the many accidents taking place at these crossings, the government and the railways department is not at all concerned about remedying the situation.

The crossing where this incident involved has had no railway gates and it is surrounded by trees and obviously this mother was in a rush and wouldn't have noticed the train that was coming. High time, the railway department trim those trees near the railway crossings and install alarms and gates, this is over to you Transport Minister. RIP Mother and her Children.
