World Bank pledges support to President Anura Dissanayake

Colombo, September 26 (Daily Mirror) - The World Bank Group has expressed its commitment to supporting Sri Lanka's economic recovery and development.

In an official letter, Martin Raiser, Vice President for the South Asia Region of the World Bank, and Riccardo Puliti, Vice President for the Asia and Pacific Region of the International Finance Corporation, extended warm congratulations to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on his election as the 9th Executive President of Sri Lanka.

The letter, while recognising that the country’s economic reset requires the State’s continued attention, states that 'opportunities for growth, prosperity, and development are equally significant'.

The letter also affirms the World Bank group's commitment to fostering inclusive growth and addressing the needs of the country’s most vulnerable populations under the new administration’s leadership.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have long been mechanisms used to exert control over the internal affairs of developing nations, particularly in Southeast Asia. The more these countries face internal turmoil, the more it benefits superpowers, who offer superficial sympathy while securing their own interests. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the leaders of these nations to govern wisely and pursue sustainable economic growth. This holds particularly true for Sri Lanka. It is imperative that Sri Lanka breaks free from dependence on foreign aid and focuses on enhancing local productivity and expanding its export markets. However, certain sectors of the economy remain heavily reliant on fossil fuel-based transportation and energy generation. Given that Sri Lanka does not produce crude oil, it must urgently explore alternative energy sources to power its economy. Investments in metro rail systems and electric buses would significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuel

USD/LKR was around 200 in the beginning of 2022. Then it went to around 360 in April 2022. In response to the depreciation of the rupee the prices went up by three times. Then from the beginning of 2024, USD/LKR remains around 300. But the prices which shot up 3 times, hasn't even come down by a small amount. The importers or the middlemen are cheating the general public, by not bringing down the prices in accordance with the currency value. The new president must look into this matter and see who is the culprit.
