World Environment Day celebrations in Ratnapura tomorrow cancelled due to disaster situation

Colombo, June 3 (Daily Mirror) - The national ceremony to mark the World Environment Day, which was scheduled to take place tomorrow (5) in Ratnapura under the auspices of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, will be held in a low key due to the prevailing disaster situation, the Daily Mirror learns.

The event which was to be held at the Sinharaja Forest Reserve’s Ratnapura entrance at Kudawa under the patronage of the President has been decided to be shift from there to the Presidential Secretariat owing to the adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the President has instructed that the money to be spent on the celebrations of the state event of the World Environment Day on June 5 be used for disaster management operations and to compensate the victims of the natural calamity, State Minister of Environment Janaka Wakkumbura told a media briefing.

The Ministry of Environment was making preparations to celebrate the event on a low key at the new venue of the Presidential Secretariat tomorrow due to floods and heavy rains prevailing in Ratnapura presently, Ministry sources said.

When contacted, a spokesperson from the Presidential Secretariat told the Daily Mirror that the event scheduled to be held in Ratnapura will be shifted to the Presidential Secretariat due to practical reasons.

This cancelation makes it very clear that there is nothing to celebrate on the Environment Day.The disaster situation is caused by environmental climate change.

Even nature is not allowing hypocrites to celebrate the World Environment Day because several uncalled for projects are surfacing which harms the environment. Genuine nature lovers should take initiatives to protect the environment for the future generations to come instead of making this day expending funds to organize unnecessary programs which does not impact on conserving and protecting the environment but gives a boost in encouraging their lackeys to the felling of trees etc.

The global environmental day is grandly celebrated in the country under the patronage of the leading politicians. But it is not obvious whether the general public or the government institutions are adhering the rules and regulations set in environmental act. Thus informal garbage disposal. illegal land cleaning unauthorised tree felling unauthorised sand mining illegal rock blasting can be observed throughout the country round the clock. Therefore instead of holding the celebrations the general public including the politicians should be educated as to how they comply with the environmental rules by holding the awareness programmes
