X-Press Pearl debris fully cleared: State Minister

Parliament, August 9 (Daily Mirror)- The owners of the X-Press Pearl informed Sri Lanka that the debris had been fully cleared by now, State Minister of Justice Anurada Jayaratne said today.

He told Parliament that removal of the debris took place in two operations such as debris recovery operation and wreck removal operation and that both operations have been completed by now.

The Minister said Sri Lanka National Hydrographic Office has been informed to obtain the certificate of clearance to confirm the debris removal.

Responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa he said Sri Lanka had recieved USD 10.2 million as interim compensation.

Didn’t any SL authority check on the clean up process? US$10 million is nothing these days for a MEGA disaster as an initially compensation. Maybe the cost of a paint job for ships! Why is it taking so long to get proper compensation in the US$ Billions of maybe 10 or more Billion? Just because the country is not developed that’s why the compensation is taking long to be paid? Established Law firms should gather the citizens affected and start a collective lawsuit in the US$ Billions instead of waiting for the lethargic minister or ministers assigned to take legal action. Lawyers representing clients in other countries for aircraft accidents succeed in mega lawsuits from the airline involved. So why can’t it be done for this accident. A gut feeling someone or some organisation is definitely blocking this whole process or has already benefited from it without sharing the proceeds. No MP has brought this issue up often but instead jabbering about stupid unproductive issues mostly.
