A ‘garbage tax’ too in the offing

Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the day would not be too far away when big cities in the country would have to collect a ‘Garbage Tax’ from city dwellers because solid waste disposal would become a huge burden in the future.

He said it was not an easy task for the Colombo Municipal Council to dispose 800 metric tons of garbage collected each day. The Kaduwela Town Council collects 80 metric tons of solid waste a day while the other big cities also collect a huge amount of solid waste which has become a headache to dispose.(Sandun A.
