Accident kills one on Southern Expressway

A 68-year-old man was killed and his son injured when the car they were traveling in crashed into a stationary jeep belonging to the RDA at 43.1 R mile post in Welipenna on the Southern Expressway this morning, police said.

They said the car had been travelling from Matara to Kadulwela at the time of the tragedy.

The injured man was admitted to the Kalutara Hospital.

Even RDA cannot stop vehicles on an expressway unless strict emeergency and that also with sign posts warning all other users

Why was the RDA vehicle parked y the 43.1 km post. Was it a legal stop or a joy stop?

Nobody will believe but I have seen one van stopped by this highway and the travellers taking photos. Wonder anyone noticed or caught, but these things are dangerous.

Only if they had made the highway a 2 to 3 feet wider disabled vehicles could stop safely. Making the road wider would have cost only a small amount compared to the total cost.

Whatever the reason, RDA is totally responsible for this accident and consider it as a homicide if the RDA has failed to display appropriate signs of the obstruction of the motorway

I have seen RDA vehicles parked on the highway without proper notices or signals in adequate distance. It is shame RDA does not follow safety precautions for the road users but ask us to follow them.

Common sense should have been used while constructing the Highway... There has to be a " Shoulder" so that in an emergency, vehicles could stop there and not right in a lane where by accidents such as this could be avoided.... Also our drivers try to FLY on teh highway who dont even let go of teh accelarator n step gently on the brakes even on a curve.. The biggest mistake was to let drivers use the highway no sooner it was constructed than educating the drivers on how to use...just like a catalog accompanies any product.. I believe this could be a case of excessive speed.... The driver will have to live with GUILT until he dies, coz he knows exactly what he did and how a tragedy could have been avoided.

Motorists "Be aware of driving particularly during night, in this motorway". Most Sri Lankans are not quite yet used and familiar with motorway driving".

Did the RDA vehicle at least have its flasher lights turned on? I cannot begin to count how many times I see vehicles stopped on the sides of very narrow roads and no flashing lights? Are drivers so stupid not to know what they are for? Not rhetorical: the answer I think is YES.

We do not have proper highways, no proper drivers competent to drive in highways and no proper authority to administer highways. So what do you do when all these factors are negative? Drive SLOW and CAUTIOUSLY. none of us are maestros in highway driving!
