Airport agent fined for graft

A former customer service agent who took bribes from a Sri Lankan businessman to waive excess baggage fees was fined a total of $6,000 on Wednesday, straitstimes said.

Murali Gobal Krisnan, 29, a Malaysian, was also ordered to pay a penalty of $500. He pleaded guilty to corruptly accepting bribes of $100 and $200 from Kulathunga Arachchilage Nayanajith Lanka Kulathunga, 32, to help passengers check in excess baggage without charging the excess baggage fees.

This happen everyday. I myself paid last time when i came to saudi arabia. One guy named Mohamed took 100 riyals from me because I had extra 10 kilos. This is not a secret. all the people working in that counters knows this. They all get the share. Even a few kilos they not allow becoz they want to take money.

The point is that there are two luggage allowances. The first is the derisory 20 kilos that IATA demands. The second is written down nowhere which is the real amount. From Saudi to Lanka it is 45 kilos, though they don't normally charge excess until 50 kg. And the excess charge is round about 1,500 rupees a kilo. However coming back from Lanka to Saudi it is only 39kg, and excess is charged from that, though only at a rate of 500 rupees a kilo, which is scant comfort if you're coming back with the same luggage you brought with you.
