ANCL ordered to pay Rs.500 million

Colombo Additional District judge C.D Gunasekara today ordered the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) to pay Rs.500 million to UNP parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapakshe for publishing a defamatory article against the MP in the Silumina newspaper in 2007 as the court case was proved beyond doubts.

MP Rajapakshe filed a case against ANCL and the then Silumina editor claiming Rs.500 million as damage for publishing an article titled ‘Wijedasage Agawinisuru Sihinaya Atharamun wey’, soon after his crossover to the opposition in November 2007. The judge also ordered the ANCL to pay the cost of the case to the plaintiff. (Farook Thajudeen)
