Former Environment and Sustainable Ministry Secretary B.M.U.D. Basnayake was appointed as new Secretary of Defense, MP Rajitha Senarathene said.

The political problem is Sarath is not a politician and do not have a political power base and he is not even an MP. So the hardcore politicians would not promote him but to give him what was taken away from him. Importantly he will not be suitable for defense as he has some issues to settle , which will go against the policy of the new government

Basnayake is a good selection. All secretaries should be SLAS Officers. They are for administrative purposes. Not to command the forces. Minister of defense or Deputy minister of defense would do that. Earlier regime used GR as deputy minister.

This position is supposed to held by a person with military exposure. Especially in a country just recovering from a 30 odd years of war and the name LTTE is not totally wiped out from encyclopedia. Does M.R.Dissanayake hold such grounds? We all like to have civilians in such positions, but before that we should know we are in the right time for that ...
