Felling of coconut tries commenced since 1977, when UNP govt commenced on development work, since then cutting down of coconut trees commenced to find land to build houses & factories. Since then coconut prices kept rising.
There was a time Sri Lanka boasted of exporting coconuts to India etc. NOW WE IMPORT FROM INDIA. What a calamity.

1.Good decition although it is too late.
2.Provide fertilizer at a affordble priceto increse theproduction.
.3. Importing of coconut is a very sensitive matter.If insects and viruses which can harm our coconut industry also come with imported coconunts,it will be a disaster.(this had happend in the past .For eg.An insect called MITA which you find all over SL came from abroad.

WHEN WE WERE IN SCHOOL,WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE EXPORTERS,OF TEA COCONUT AND RUBBER. NOW WE ARE GOING TO IMPORT COCONUTS. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW HOW MANY COCONUT TREES WERE PLANTED IN THE ONE MILLION TREE GROWING CAMPAIGN, AND OF COURSE THE NUMBER OF TREES CUT

The country is in crisis. There's not enough land for housing so coconut estates are leveled to make way for housing, but @ the same time there's not enough coconuts to feed the ppl. This is a case of population explosion

This is just a token and meaningless attempt. The reason is, the (1) low prices in the period 2008/9, and (2) very high cost of fertilizer. As a owner of a medium sized plantation, I know we were unable to apply fertilizer for two years because the total cost of about Rs. 650,000/ was more than 60% of the farm-gate nut prices. Also, rampant stealing and other costs make it impossible to maintain coconut land.

Does any one aware how difficult to find a coconut plucker these days. In certain areas there are full of nuts in the trees but no one to pluck. As per news in Thailand they are training monkeys to pluck the coconuts. It wont be a bad idea in SL too.

Ban on coconut palm felling is due the shortage of nuts. If we had enough nuts no ban on cutting trees?
This could have been avoided easily if you (govt) were awake 15 years or so ago.
Ban all tree (not only coconut palms) felling unless its really needed.

Ban should be extended to all tress, th exception should be tree plantations where the trees are grown for timber or where a permit is issued to cover the felling of a tree

The ministers and the authorities should have had forward thinking plan to ban the felling on coconut trees long ago and cultivate more and more coconut trees to replace the old ones.
