Former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa who left for the US soon after the presidential elections arrived in the country a short while ago, sources said.
A large crowd including 30 members of local government bodies and provincial council minister Nimal Lansa were at the Bandaranaike International Airport to welcome him.
Mr. Rajapaksa told those who had gathered there that he came to the country to help the police and the judiciary to carry out the investigations against him.
“We Rajapaksas have only taken political decisions. We have not committed any crime, murder or fraud. This crowd proves that,” he said.
Mr. Rajapaksa said some people were carrying out a mudslinging campaign that he had fled the country but had only gone to the US for medical treatment.
“I have no reason to flee the country. I will never forget my people who voted for me in Gampaha, The development we started has come to a halt today,” he said. (Deepa Adikari)
