Camels and Ostriches will be imported to Sri Lanka from next year for the consumption of their milk and eggs, Deputy Minister of Live stock H. R. Mithrapala said in Parliament today. A feasibility study in this regard is currently being conducted.
The Deputy Minister added that a feasibility study is being conducted to identify a favorable climate for the farming of Camels and Ostriches in Sri Lanka and that Mannar has been identified as a favorable area. (KB/YP)

Camels and ostriches are far better then the donkeys in the parliament.

First of all, Ostrich eggs are very expensive. Camels eat a certain types of leaves which are grown only in desert climets. Also Camel milk cannot be consumed unless you get use to it slowly.

When they have nothing to do they come up with the most absurd ideas. Mithrapala could easily have banned eggs and milk than think of Camels and ostriches!!!!!

paul Sunday, 05 December 2010 02:04 AM
Ostriches are farmed for their leather and feathers, not their eggs. Perhaps leather handled feather dusters could be SL's new boom industry.

Gulf Kolla Sunday, 05 December 2010 08:41 AM
Camel meat is heaty but the milk is cooling. Camel milk neutralises the high glucose level in the body, thus is good for diabetes. This may be the reason why the god has given the date palms (high sugar) and camels to the middle east.

Ramesh Sunday, 05 December 2010 09:43 AM
Why not bring down some cows instead of camels and have some bigger farms in Nanu Oya and Watawala areas... where the maintenance of these cows will be less.. instead of bringing Camels and Ostriches and creating more problems... think from your head not from anywhere else... What group of ministers we have.. my sympathies.

Camel milk instead of cow milk! So that can become camels. Good move as girls are not having enough dowry to get married.

Bury the head in the sand like an Ostrich! That's what you will do by eating Ostrich eggs. However, the good part is that people will have less stress. They will not know prices going up when you bury the head in the sand! Will you?
