British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday demanded a "transparent, credible and independent" probe into the alleged massacre of Sri Lankan Tamils, days after he pressed President Mahinda Rajapaska for an enquiry into rights violations during the final days of the civil war in 2009.
During the CHOGM summit in Colombo this month, he had said that if the Sri Lankan government fails to launch an independent enquiry by March 2014, UK will call for an international enquiry through the United Nations.
In a column for 'Asian Lite' newspaper from London, the prime minister said: "First of all, there should be a transparent, credible investigation into alleged war crimes. No one wants to go back to the days of the Tamil Tigers, a brutal terrorist organisation.
"But equally, the Sri Lankan government cannot look the other want. When I met President Rajapaska I pressed for an investigation to take place - and I made clear that if those investigations were not begun properly by next March, we would call for an international enquiry through the United Nations.
He also demanded genuine progress on human rights on all the fronts, including genuine freedom of expression and a free media, an end to the intimidation of journalists and human rights defenders and action to stamp out torture.
Cameron also underlined the need for genuine reconciliation between the Tamil and Sinhala communities to work together for a bright future of Sri Lanka.
".. for too long it has been blighted by conflict. If Sri Lanka takes the opportunity to heal these old wounds then there is the prospect of a much brighter future for all its people."
Referring to the situation in Sri Lanka's northern provinces, he said: "It's now over a week since I returned from Jaffna and the images still both haunt and inspire me."
"The visit I made to the north of Sri Lanka was fascinating - you can get all the briefings you like but nothing can replace seeing the situation for yourself."
He noted that he had to face opposition from certain quarters over attending the CHOGM meet.
"They said that by going I was giving legitimacy to what has happened in the north of the country. I couldn't disagree more," he said.
He, however, reiterated his stand that by attending the meet, he was able to shine a light on what needs to be done.
Mentioning that the end of civil war has provided an opportunity as well challenges to start things afresh, he said: "The end of the civil war in Sri Lanka is a massive opportunity but the issues now need to grasped. This isn't about imposing a Westminster view of the world. It's about standing up for the values that all Commonwealth countries have signed up to."
Lankan government has earlier rejected this demand and is considering to launch a 'Truth and Reconciliation Commission,' modelled on South Africa. But the date for such an enquiry is not yet unveiled. (PTI)

What's the problem, complete the probe and reveal hard facts. If things have gone wrong and out of control during the military assault during the final days of the war, so be it. Accept that Innocent civilians have got killed, why run away from probing. The more SL Govt ignores, it will strengthen the case of western countries to push for probing into alleged crimes. Let their be a faster and credible probe, let the facts come out. It was war finally....causalities will be there. Commit to the world and set by actions that the minorities are living in harmony and release a road map to show that there will be all round development in infrastructure and job opportunities in the north and east. SL can lead by example....give freedom to press also

what about the credible and independent" probe into the alleged massacre of Iraqi innocent civilians, mostly women & children ?????

Let’s be clear here . Multiple Choice question.
(a) Sri lanka has done nothing wrong. Any body can investigate . We are ready for any impartial inquiry.
(b) We have not done something wrong that others has not done. What is the big deal.
(c) We killed 40,000 people only. Look at USA etec they killed nearly million.. what is the big deal.
(d) Yes, we did blunders and committed crimes .. agree for accountability , go for real reconciliation and set the country in a real path of prosperity.
(e) Who cares about the country. We are half way through only robbing the country . The assets amassed is enough for 10 generations only. Let us complete the task. You will get your share of time.
Please choose the best answer .. If you know the question!!

The army has the right to defend its country & its people foreign & within that's what they were tasked with & they did that, by ending , the war.
Any war has collateral damage the drones & troops of US/UK & France /Israel in other hot spots is killing so a many 1000s.
The way the Tamil diaspora & most the rest of the Tamils with the west is acting is only creating Sinhala fundamentalism further instead of reconciliation, each party needs to put the past behind & make a genuine effort, there has to be a more acceptable front from the Tamils , if not the blood of many thousands will be spilled further should another clash happen which I pray not. The plight of the innocent Tamils is in the hands of them to take a stand , rise against this or we can see this go on forever until either the Sinhalese or Tamils are wiped out so for the sake of both peoples rise above this.
