Chinese man fined for contraband

A Chinese national accused of having 2,000 illegally imported cigarettes in his possession was ordered to pay a fine of Rs.35,000 by a Colombo Court today.

The accused Su Yang was arrested by the Kollupitiya police while he was traveling in a vehicle at the Kollupitiya area with 2,000 illegal cigarettes.

Counsel Mohammed Mohideen appearing on behalf of the Chinese national informed Court that the stock of cigarettes in question had kept his client’s possession for his own consumption.

However, the accused pleaded guilty to all charges and thereby he was ordered to pay a fine of Rs.35,000.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate further ordered the police that the concern amount of cigarettes be destroyed with immediate effect.
