The government is planning to turn the Colombo City into another Las Vegas by amending the Gaming Bill, setting up a red light district and evicting the city dwellers, JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti said
MP Handunnetti added that the JVP will take to the street against these moves by the government. (YP)

No surprise here. That's the only thing the JVP can do after all - take to the streets and create traffic jams. They just want to stop the country from developing so that they can continue to benefit from the people's poverty.

Naveen Sunday, 07 November 2010 09:01 AM
The GoSL should go ahead with this plan, with effective checks on immoral activities, before our neighbors grab the opportunity. In South Asia, other than SL, only Nepal has Casino clubs. This move will bring in huge revenue and job opportunities for the Lankan youth. Once this move comes into fruition, there will be lots of wealthy tourists flocking to SL. JVP need not shed crocodile tears for you as they have been the reason for the deaths of several thousand youth in the past.

Well Its a good act.. We need to have everything available openly to adults.. To select what they want to do and not do is their own option. Good move by the government. But I have one concern. If they wanted to these things in power then why they got collaborated with Hela Karumaya and instigated project such Mathata Thita.. Somehow their strategy has become success, now who opposed these things vehemently are now in their side and cant open their mouth.. Good Work from MR...& The Group..

pd Sunday, 07 November 2010 09:09 AM
This is a good move by GOSL. Even in certain gulf countries now they are allowing casinos by separating them in man made islands etc.. as this is all revenue. Yes Srilanka being a Buddhist country we have certain values but we also must give freedom for people to decide what is best for the country we cannot ignore foreign revenue. In Pakistan where Liquor is banned a non muslim visitor can order to his room & they manufacture the stuff there ( anyone tasted Rawalpindi beer??). JVP idiots are no better than LTTE. They have done far more worst crimes incl murder. At least now they cud take to the streets but during JVP curfew in 1989 we cud not look out of our window. Hypocrites!!

I’m confused. Personally, I don’t mind Colombo becoming a LasVegas, but I don’t understand how one could do that by selling ‘Mathata thitha’ and Banning ‘Akon’. That’s why I say, that this government doesn’t have a PLAN on how we should develop this country. They try little of Singapore here Thailand there and at the same time preach about ‘Grama rajya’ and Buddhisum!

I am amazed at the comments I read. It is this short-sightedness that has driven our country to where it is!
With gambling comes poverty, becuase for ONE person to win / make money, TEN others have to loose!!!
Then, if prostitution is legalised, when your loved ones enter into that trade out of pleasure or necessity, would these same voices be heard?? Please note that the majority of people commenting here are men.
What about the diseases, the drug addictions, the breakdown of mariages, the destruction of families?
Are we ready for all these? To welcome 'Vegas' is to welcome all the baggage that comes with it.
