Crises at power stations

Mass scale tripping at several power stations had caused power disruptions in Colombo and the suburbs on Monday, CEB sources said.

Samanalawewa Power Station which generates 120 MW tripped on Sunday and Monday causing the nearby Embilipitiya privately-owned ACE power station which generates 100MW of power to trip as well.

This loss of power generation was big enough to reduce the system frequency resulting in thePuttalam LTL-owned 100MW-HeladhanaviPower Station and the NorochcholaiCoal Power Plant (300MW)to also trip.

Even though there was no imminent blackout,residents in several areas in Colombo and its suburbs were on Sunday and Monday hit by a sudden power failure ranging from 30 minutes to one and a half hours.

I am no system engineer. A bit of thinking can see what is happening. The hydro systems were overloaded as CEB now has to pay for the fuel. That caused the tripping.

Check Mattala Airport's power consumption. May be CEB cannot feed the big Giant.
