The daily wages for estate workers has been increased to Rs 515 with the signing of a new collective agreement between the trade unions and the employers today. A spokesman from the Janatha Estate Workers Union told Daily Mirror that the unions signed a new collective agreement with the employers today. (YP)

It is good for the workers but could the estate afford this pay hike. If the income of the estates stays the same or less then estates will reduce the workers to keep the estates functioning. If it gets worse they may even close down. So did the pay hike did good to the estate workers ? To compensate the estates should receive more for their green leaf they produce. Not the current prices.

They are better off than Colombo workers. Family income will become at least 30,000 per month plus housing water medical, No transport cost, clothing cost is very small as living in the workplace itself. Sadly at least 50% will spend for Arrack. See how many liquar bars in a town like Bogawantalawa, Norwood.
