Death sentence for undergrad’s murder



Balendra Prasad Sathisseran, found guilty of the charge of murdering Peradeniya University Undergraduate Selva Vinyagar Prakash Varagpragas on October 6, 1997, was today sentenced to death in absentia by Kandy High Court Judge Manilal Waidyatilleke.  

The convict, who is said to be living abroad, was also sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment on one of the charges and a warrant for his arrest issued to Interpol.

Initially, two accused were indicted on five charges of abduction, unlawful assembly, grievous hurt, torture and the killing of Prakash Varagapargas.  

On April 4, 2008, the second accused pleaded guilty the charges and was ordered to pay State Costs of Rs.1,500 and Rs.1,500 with a surety bond of Rs.50,000 to be of good behavior. He was also ordered to pay Rs.100,000 to the victim’s parents.(L.B.Senaratne)
