Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka has ordered the cancellation of the transfer of Northern Province senior DIG Nimal Lewke. The polls chief has informed the IGP in this regard, the election monitoring body PAFFREL said.
Lewke, who is in charge of operations in the North, had been recalled to the police headquarters in Colombo.
Police transfers ahead of a Presidential election is a violation of election laws. However when contacted a senior police source insisted the DIG was not being transferred and will continue to hold on to his previous post but will operate from Colombo and be given additional duties.
The Election Commissioner on 7th December ordered all government departments, institutions, corporations and other entities not to hire, promote or transfer any employee until the presidential election results are released. (KB)

I see that lot of government money can be saved in this wise action. Close down all outstation offices and operate from one office in Colombo. Looks more practical and efficient. The ploice sources who issued this statment must be thinking that we are third class fools to believe what they say.

Sri Lanka is suffering because her citizens don't love the truth but always want to deceive and to be deceived so the devil gain power by deceiving the nation.
They have no law and they are lawless that is the main problem and curse of this nation...So there is a curse on this nation...So wicked government was sent by God as a judgment for this nation..Once this Nation suffered from a war...But still war is ongoing...Because these wicked leaders earn monies billions and billions by corruptions, wickedness and by shedding innocent blood to gain their power and their blood cries out unto God Almighty asking judgment on this nation...So the Nation is suffering from poverty to poverty...The Nation should repent and come to God with changing heart if they want peace truly...And that peace cannot be given by any political leader...but only from God... By the Prophet

I don't think this is the correct answer. He should not be brough to Colombo at all, if it is not a transfer. If Opposition is having so much much faith in the Election Commissioner why they called his powerless wimp until before the close of campaign day. He is an honest public official who saw both UNP and SLFP won elections. If both the parties want consensus really after the election, as no party will get the required two thirds, this gentleman can be kept as a go-between, facilitator or provider of good offices; if Anura Bandaranaike can arrange a sandhaanaya alliance and Mangala Samaraweera a common candidature why can't he do that? If both main parties agree he will do the unification on vital matters!

# sun 2010-01-25 14:25 - Could we leave the Devil & God to their own devises and carry on like decent human beings. There has never ever been any proof of any Gods or Devils. Elections are conducted by humans and not by beings outside the realm of this earth. If people are foolish enough in the 21st century to believe in the "mambo jumbo" of Gods and Devils they deserve what they get. Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.

Will Elections Commissioner's order be allowed to stand? If not, he has the powers to annul northern poll. His will has to prevail even if President is all powerful executive. Let's see what happens in the next 24 hours. The question is why he was transferred just now?

The Elections Commissioner should not hesitate to do everything within his power to ensure that the peoples' will is upheld! It is not only his constitutional duty, but also a duty cast upon him by society, in the interests of the nation, its children and those yet to be born!

Will it take effect after the Elections or immediately? I doubt that the DIG will be allowed to go-back, before the end of the Election!

I also feel that MR will win by hook or by crook, Largely due to uninformed or ill informed citizens who cannot make an informed decision like others who have access to proper public opinion. Sad isnt it? But I really hope I am wrong about this.

IGP is a Baboon alright. A fellow who cannot understand any langauge. He seems to be the biggest idiot in the police department. See the calibre of our IGP? We have peons in offices with better senses.

It is clear which side of the divide the election commissioner is on. Congratulations to you. Probably the govt wanted Lewke to do something wrong, and he refused - that is why he was transfered immediately to Colombo. Congratulations to you too, Lewke, if this is a correct thinking.
