Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage today said that disciplinary action will be taken against those Sri Lanka cricket team members who fail to return from the IPL for the practice matches for the England tour once they are selected.
The Sri Lankans are scheduled to leave for England on May 10, and the IPL-contracted players have been requested to return home at least by May 5 to prepare for the tour. The IPL ends on the May 28.
“On a recommendation made by the national selection committee I have instructed the secretary of the board to inform the players to return by at least the 5th of May to prepare for the tour,” Sri Lanka’s sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.
“When contracted players of Sri Lanka Cricket represent other tournaments, they should make sure that their priority lies with the national team and this will be strictly adhered to in the future,” Aluthgamage added.
The move is in complete contrast to the one that was taken three years ago when it cancelled a tour of England in 2009 to allow the players participate in the hugely popular Twenty20 league in 2008.
Besides Sangakkara and Jayawardene, Suraj Randiv, Nuwan Kulasekara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Tilakaratne Dilshan and Nuwan Pradeep are some of the Sri Lankan players involved in the fourth season of the IPL

Mr. Dillon, Dont be so jealous. Learn to enjoy someone earn something that is worth their talent. These "personal gains" are hard earned and do you want to talk about our minister's "personal gains"?

This is an FTP tour so they will have to forgo the rest of their IPL matches. Our cricketers our professional and patriotic enough to honour their contracts.
But look at this man threatening our players, what about taking disciplinary action against the corrupt board officials????????

NOpe I dont think so. THis is the national interest against personal gains. Do you like to see Sri Lankan team playing 3 Test matches without key players?

@Johann well said. This is about national interest against self.

NO way... IPL is mere hard hitting cricket format. When playing those and go to England's seaming wickets is a nightmare. It is very important to practice in England conditions in advance.

Let me tell you a story. You are in love with a girl. You get married with the consent of the parents. You go on your honeymoon. All of a sudden the boys father decides the girl is not good enough for his son and wants him to leave the wife and come home. Isn't it what the Minister wants. and to be threatened with disciplinary action from a man who himself was not given a ministry in the first instance due to a disciplinary matter. At this rate not only the IPL but not even a county will contract our players as they are subject to whims and fancies of a erratic group of people.

The entire country knew that these players were taking part in the IPL and the days of the tournament, from the the the bids and selections were announced. And I assume the Sports Minister has to sanction players leaving the country. Then why this sudden 360% turn.Is it the new selection committee trying to show their powerless and the expense of SL Cricket.? or the Sports Minister wants to take revenge from India in return of the treatment given to Ministers at the World Cup cricket. May this issue be sorted out with sober heads with SL cricket well being the priority and not petty personal agendas to ruin our cricket.

All the SL players should stay in IPL since they have consulted the SLC before they signed it. If all stay in
IPL, what SLC can do. Drop them all? Ha Ha

Minister Aluthgamage is behaving the same way as the proverbial monkey who got hold of a razor blade. What is he going to do if all the players (mind you they constitute the cream of Sri Lanka's cricket) defy his edict? I suspect that some will. Then Minister Aluthgamage can become a member of the Sri Lanka cricket team and tour England!

Johann Gunasekara Wednesday, 13 April 2011 03:59 AM
BCCL must have a clear policy of enforcing players contracts, IPL only helps ciricket in India as many young Indian hopefuls are pitted against the worlds best. We can't totally deny players the opportunity to earn mega bucks, but there must be a system to deter them from putting self before country
