People will no longer have to wait for six months to an year to receive their driving licences as they would soon be issued their licences within seven days under a new electronically modified system, the Transport Ministry said today.
Transport Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake said the Motor Traffic Department in Weherahera receives over 1,200 applications for driving licences. Of these only about 600 are accepted daily.
He said the processing of driving licences could be done within two days and thereafter the licence was sent to the applicant through the post they would receive within seven days, he said.
A ministry source said those who were applying for the driving licences will not have to stand in long queues at Weherahera hereafter as plans have been made to extend the services of the Motor Traffic Department to other parts of the country.
He said the ministry hoped to set up branches in the other districts too.
The sources said there were eight counters at the department now, but the number of counters would be increased for more efficiency.
The Motor Traffic Department issues about 40,000 driving licences each month and about 600,000 licences each year. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
