Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday various foreign and local elements were attempting to destabilize Sri Lanka through the judiciary.
“When carrying out his work the President has been faced with various challenges. Everyone knows that school children, university students, university lecturers and trade unions were used to create trouble. But because of the confidence the people had in the President the trouble makers could not achieve their goal. Today they are attempting to do it through the judiciary.
They want to destabilise this country. We know that peace and stability is vital if a country is to develop and for tourists and investors to come here,” he said
He told those who had gathered for the “Wayamba Asiriya 2012” that a conspiracy was being hatched by foreign elements to topple the Rajapaksa regime.
Mr. Rajapaksa said the country was facing challenges similar to those that existed during military conflict. He said LTTE activists in other countries were attempting to regroup and create chaos in Sri Lanka.
“Many consumer goods that can be produced locally are imported in large quantities. Although it is hard to believe, even tamarind is imported. It is sad that we import food crops that grow well in the country. If we are self-sufficient in food, the colossal expenditure on imports can be curtailed to the barest minimum.
The foreign exchange savings can be used for development programmes. The government provided incentives including fertiliser subsidy to the farmers regardless of the war expenditure.
The most formidable challenge facing many countries is the want of food security. A country with food security will never collapse. Foreign elements attempted to pose a challenge to the government through the university teachers and the students, but failed. Now they are attempting to gain their end through the judiciary”
North Central Province Agriculture Minister D.B. Herath, Ministry Secretary Vijitha Bandara and several local politicians and officials attended the ceremony. (Pushpakukara Jayaratne)

I think any one with half a brain would agree that there is no alternative govt at the moment that has a better solution to any of Sri Lanka's problems. This regime is the best of the worst. However, Gota is talking like he is in the opposition. You have been in govt for how many years now and you are only now realizing that goods that can be produced locally are being imported ? Is he blaming the Rajakasa's for the failures ? At least that's a good sign then. Accepting the fault is the first step to recovery. If not, be a bit more intelligent Gota, we're not fools!

You still think Sri Lankans are fools and cannot understand what you and your brothers are doing to this beautiful country. We would have been the 'Miracle of Asia' by now if not for your personal agendas and greed for power. So get off your high horse and stop blaming the people and look within yourself for a change.

It is rather strange but the same pattern going on like the Fonseka episode or drama. One can recall, when Fonseka was in the helm of power and fighting the war - how he was denigrated by this same lot and subsequently dragged him to politics by the same people who hated him. Now take the new drama of CJ. When her hubby got into NSB corruption, same gang asked his head with CJ's at once playing Fonseka here. Ironically, gang who were very critical of CJ and hubby - today praising her and singing hossanas for her against the govt. What are the games these gangs are playing insulting our intelligence.

Gota you are a gem of a man. Usually straight forward and say spade a spade. But in general under Rajapaksa regime there are lot of allegations, why did they want to start night Race car driving in Colombo knowing that there is so much social unrest in the country. Unless the president stop the corruption involvement within the family members ,Rajapaksa name will go to history as another corrupt president.

If the government is much concerned about elements that can 'desablize' the country, then the recent ongoing spreading of 'religious Hatred' by many fractions should be looked at before it grows up and create some unfortunate incident like 1983 Black July riots.
If a website speaks against government, they take steps to ban, but they re silen on some of facebook, web sites. Is it because such things will help ppl to forget the other issues such as 'impeachment'...?

We follow Sri-Lankan politics through media. As GR says Peace & Security is vital and top priority for any country to progress. Many people may forget what a Great and Noble Service MR has done to save the country from Northern Terrorists. We can not afford to change the present National Government (consisting of Sinhala,Tamil & Muslims) until the LTTE threat is wiped out, not only from SL, but from the entire world. As GR says it is good to know that the majority of the population in the country continues to back MR as they love the country, but not treacherous politics fueled by foreign powers including diaspora.

It may be that interested parties now use the judicary to destabilse country. Who gave them the opening? It is the present government by not giving the CJ a fair hearing. No one say that the issues should not be enquired. CJ too though she disputed the the power of PSC went before it and asked for time to defend. that was denied. So who should blame whom?
