First draft resolution on SL ‘circulated’



The first draft resolution, calling the Sri Lanka government to conduct an independent and credible investigation into allegations of violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law was circulated during the first day of the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.
 
The draft resolution was sponsored by United States, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Montenegro, FYR of Macedonia, and Mauritius titled “Promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human rights in Sri Lanka”
 
It urges the Government of Sri Lanka to investigate all attacks, by individuals and groups on temple, mosques and churches and to take steps to prevent future attacks: and to investigate and hold accountable perpetrators of attacks on places of worships, journalists, human rights defenders, members of religious minority groups and other members of civil society.
 
It also calls upon the Sri Lankan government to release the results of its investigations into alleged violations by security forces, including the attacks on unarmed protestors in Weliweriya on August 1, 2013, and the army Court of inquiry report of 2013. 
 
It also called the Office of the High Commissioner to assess progress toward accountability and reconciliation, monitor relevant national processes and to investigate alleged violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes by both parties in Sri Lanka.
