President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed the papers on the 18th evening and handed over the papers to Chief of Staff Gamini Senerath before leaving for Qatar to enable the release of Sarath Fonseka. Papers will be sent to the Ministry of Justice on Monday, Presidential Spokesman Bandula Jayasekara said.
Last Friday, Colombo High Court granted conditional cash bail of Rs. one million with two sureties of Rs. 2.5 million each on former army commander Sarath Fonseka in the case of harbouring army deserters during the presidential election.

It seems to me, no many comments thanks to Janapathi. Without the country President pardon, nothing can proceed. Dont bring the US Obama or International community into the picture, they are more worried about themselves about their own regime changes.First is France, Germany next, follow by US, UK.

Well, he shouldn't have been sent to prison in the 1st place. But still, this is progress. The Problem is, UNP, JVP clowns will all be trying to take credit for his release. I hope people won't fall that.

well said.. you took the words off my mouth... YES no matter what , he proved to be an officer and a gentleman. He could have chosen to bow down and go with the flow, yet he stood his ground with his head held high..... NEVER ever would have he, thought he'd stay a day in prison.. but he did and did well ...

He should also not bow down to the hunger demand of opposition politicos, who had him for their breakfasts.
They did nothing to save the country from bloody terrorism and rather they opposed winning the war.
General, this time, please use your brain the way you used to win the war.
President, defence secretary, Champika, Wimal and all are the right people to get along with.
Budu Saranai hero!

As he was a political prisoner he should be given all his rights robbed by this Govt such as RANK,UNIFORM, PENSION, LAND at Narahenpita, etc. His name should be included as a war HERO in the History of Srilanka. Also he should be given the rights to do his politics as he likes within the constitution of Srilanka. Otherwise a release just to satisfy the USA is not worth. Its better for him to stay in the cell for few months more.

Well no matter what when and why - the bottom line is SF should not have been kept in a cell even for a day - simply considering the fact that his total commitment towards the war unlike most of his predecessors.
Once again he is our Mcarthur - our Rommel - our Nelson
We wish and pray that he will spentd his valuable time with his great family where ever he wish to stay - that is our ultimate satisfaction - Thanks to President's decision we salute you for that.

Spot on. Legal System, pressure from outside and within, peoples frustration with the regime and to show the UNHCR (for instant political prisoners) that its recomendations are looked into, while GL jabbering jargons in the US.
Welcome back to civilisation Gen SF.
