Four members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) including the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman have been sacked from their posts and the party over allegations of having molested children and women.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena told a news conference today they had taken strict disciplinary action against provincial council members and chairmen who are alleged to sexually molested women and children.
“The government has been criticized because of the misdeeds of some members including the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman and some provincial councilors. I assure you that we have taken strict disciplinary action against them and we have stripped them off of their posts and removed them from the party,” he said.
The minister said the government had given strict orders to the police and the child protection authority to act without fear or favour.
Mr. Sirisena said there was no doubt about the government winning the forthcoming PC elections.
He said the East had benefited from several major development projects and the people were on the side of the government.
Mr. Sirisena said despite what opposition parties said, the UNP could not handle elections and that the UNP had no right to accuse the government of using state property for campaigning purposes because the UPFA knows it was against the law to do so.
He said the UNP had abused its powers by engaging in various disgraceful acts while it was in office. (Nabeela Hussain & Nishan Casseem)
