Several statues in Batticaloa, including that of Mahathma Gandhi and Lord Baden Powell the founder of the world scout movement have been vandalized in the early hours today by an unidentified gang, police said.
The statue of Lord Baden Powell was a memorial statue erected in honour of the leader of the movement, while the statue of Mahathma Ghandhi was erected over 40 years ago in honour of the Indian freedom fighter.
The heads of the statues have been completely mutilated by the gang. The statues of Swamy Vipulananthar erected in the premises of the Batticoloa Anaipanthi Vidyalayam and the statue of Palavarmani Periyathambipillai in the vicinity of Batticoloa zonal education office has also been vandalized by the gang.
The Batticaloa police are currently conducting investigations into the incident.

Someone is trying to take away your attention from all the hardships that the common man is facing in Srilanka and all of us are wasting our time worrying about vandalization of statues! Haven't we seen enough distruction in the country which are far more greater than the vandalization of these statues?

Mahathma Ghandhi, Load Buddah, Jesus Christ and many others , they are great example for human, they would definitely hate to block the traffic at junctions. If you really respect their stratus rather than their teachings, first of all kill the birds who untidy them.

The statutes of these great people are erected to draw inspiration from what they have done and as a reminder of them. People who vandalize these are obviously uncultured, uncouth and without any sense of values, like those who vandalized the Bamiyan Buddha statutes.

Simon Saturday, 07 April 2012 07:15 AM
islam and statues just can't seem to co-exist. Those statues are to blame for causing such intolerance and hate. on a side note, I have visited the East, was my first visit there as a tourist last year, and i found the place terribly repulsive. They seem to glorify an arab culture by naming roads and towns after despots in the Middle East. Their women dress in black ninja costumes and the men dye their beards in a repulsive red color. I believe South Asia is doomed because of these people.

This is very sad news. Mahathma Ghandhi was the greatest leaders the world has had. When President Obama was asked by a school kid as to whom he would like to have lunch with he said is would be the Mahathma. There are a lot we can learn from him. It is said that all he had at the time of passing away was his glasses, watch, bowl and plate. Well that was all. He travelled on foot.
