GDP grows 6.4% in 2Q12



Sri Lanka's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 6.4 percent in the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12) from a year earlier, the lowest since 2009, the data released by the Census and Statistics Department showed.

The agriculture sector grew 9.1 percent during the quarter against1.8 percent recorded in the previous year while the industry sectors growth remained flat at 9.5 percent. The services sector moderated to 4.5 percent from previous year's 8.8 percent.

However, compared with the first quarter of 2012 (1Q12) the industrial sector’s growth fell to 9.5 percent from 10.8 percent while services sector moderated to 4.5 percent from 5.8 percent in the previous three months.(Indika Sakalasooriya)
