Gem stolen from Srisena Cooray’s house



The house of former United National Party (UNP) strongman Sirisena Cooray was burgled and a valuable gem and foreign currency stolen allegedly by a domestic aide, the Mullariyawa Police has told a Colombo Magistrate.

Army deserter Amila Nuwan alias Army Wasantha was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Prasanna De Alwis on charges of having forcibly opened the iron safe at Mr. Cooray’s residence Salmal Uyana and had stolen a yellow coloured gem and a large amount of foreign currency belonging to Mr. Cooray’s son Prasanna.

Police said the suspect was earlier attached to the Sinha Regiment and had worked at Mr. Sirisena’s house. He had allegedly connived with the cook to carry out the robbery

The Police also said that the suspect had also taken away 20 live bullets.

The Magistrate remanded the suspect till May 18 while the cook is evading arrest. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
