United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera yesterday charged that it was the Government which was responsible for the communal clashes in the country and not the United States or Saudi Arabia.
He said orders from higher-ups were what compelled the police to release 13 suspects who were arrested over the communal clashes.
“Police are helpless. A Kalutara District DIG has also been transferred,” he said.
Mr. Samaraweera asked External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris to go to Dharga Town from where the clashes began and to see for himself what had really happened without sitting in air-conditioned rooms in Colombo and relating tall stories to ambassadors that Muslim extremists had done this.
He accused the Government of trying to hide the burning issues that the Government was confronted with saying Muslim extremism was the cause of the communal clashes in the country and Jihadist groups were operating in the country.
“We ask the government to show if Jihadist groups are operating here and show us the destruction they had caused. I strongly reject extremists and extremism. The Government is trying to cover up its sins by hiding behind this extremism,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)
