Govt. confused about polls

The government yesterday said it was totally confused about the happenings in the run up to the March 17 local government polls as the elections commissioner kept instructing his officials to suspend election work for various local government bodies at various stages, putting the government and the public in the dark.

Responding to a journalist at yesterday’s weekly cabinet briefing, Cabinet spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the government was keen to hold elections for each and every local government body that had been dissolved.

“The government is not in a position to intervene with the Elections Commissioner’s decisions or the court proceedings. We cannot discuss the developments even in Parliament. We are in a totally undecided on our future actions in respect of the election,” Minister Rambukwella said.

Minister Rambukwella said the government had no influence whatsoever on the decisions taken by the elections commissioner to postpone elections. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
