Govt. discourage tobacco cultivation

The government has requested farmers to refrain from cultivating tobacco and instead turn to vegetables and fruit cultivation in a bid to increase food crops, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said today. (SAJ)

Growing tobacco pays them good money due to the direct involvement of CTC in the process. Where as growing veggies & fruits will lead to farmers being exploited by the middleman. This needs to be addressed.

govt is requesting farmers, not telling them. so I guess the success / failure of this will depend on the profitability of veg cultivation vs tobacco. basically I feel this is nothing but a election gimmick to look good, that is unless the minister can convince the farmers that vegi cultivation is more profitable.
