Heroin supply severely disrupted: Police

A marked drop in drug peddling activities and in the use of narcotics has been noticed in Colombo and the suburbs during the past few weeks, the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) said yesterday.

“There is a big drop in the sale and use of heroin and other narcotics. According to reports, drug dealers are facing major obstacles in carrying out their nefarious activities,” a senior narcotics officer said.

“The methods of transporting and storing heroin appear to have changed suddenly,” he said. “We have been working on this for a while and we are hoping that we can make a big breakthrough soon,” he said.

The PNB said major deals are known to be struck at Magazine Road, Serpentine Road, Dematagoda, Grandpass and Kunuela area in Wattala. The narcotics distribution network also operates from these areas.

Police said heroin is smuggled to the country especially from Pakistan. Sri Lanka is also used as a transit hub.

Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) is assisted by the Special Task Force (STF) in drug detection operations.
The police have arrested nearly 4,000 heroin addicts and dealers during operations throughout the country during past 18 months.

According to highly placed police sources, a Pakistani identified as Siddeek is Sri Lanka's main heroin supplier and he is continuing the distribution and sales of heroin despite the crackdown. They said he was one of the main heroin suppliers to underworld groups operating in and around Colombo.

Some of Sri Lanka's most wanted drug dealers are Kirulapone Champi also known as Madura, Galkisse Ajantha, Kalubowila Sunanda, Ratmalane Asanka also known as Lansiya and Roxywatte Asanka.

Police said some of their operatives have been arrested and the leaders are in hiding but their operations are continuing despite the crackdown. (By Supun Dias)
