Opposition leader and leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesighe today said those who participate in the Sathyagraha that is being organised by the party reformists tomorrow would not be considered as party members.
He said no UNP member would participate at tomorrow’s Sathyagraha.
Mr. Wickremesighe who made a special statement to the press said the reformists are trying to create a clash at today’s working committee meeting of the party to stop the appointment of the nomination board.
He said the only matter that would be discussed at the working committee will be the coming local government election.
Mr. Wickremesighe who hit hard at an advertisement which was aired on a private TV channel said no media organisations should mix business interests with the news they broadcast and publish. He said certain media organisations try to fulfil their business interests by controlling what they publish.
He said he is not willing to answer to the accusations that are made by the reformist group. “ I am every body’s leader including the ones who are criticizing me therefore it is not worth wasting time answering the accusations made against me,” he said. (Yohan Perera)

How can we accept what you are telling sir? No one throughout SL like to see UNP anymore under your leadership as you have failed to secure a single victory in an election over the years, instead you have destroyed the spirit of members and fans. You are behaving in an authoritative way creating more and more frictions in the party. We accept you are a great politician but not a good leader. very true citizen, it seems almost all reformists have their own agendas and most of them are driven by maharaja's not the grass root level UNPers like they say. i know how Sajith live his life in a fancy style which is not shown in TV he even was not in Sri Lanka for more than half of his life and lived in western countries. most of these people's leaders are not the same in their personal lives they just pretend to be simple villegers just to loot poor people's vote. what this small group of people show is nothing but greed for power and for that they'll even distroy their mothers and fathers. what to talk of RW.

There's no one suitable to be the leader of the UNP right now. Karu is not strong enough and does not have charisma. Sajith is only half baked and not decisive, while Ranil, though he knows it all; does not have leadership qualities and he's also arrogant. The only person suitable to challenge MR is in jail and that's why he's kept there. So just forget about winning elections any time in the future.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 16 August 2011 01:37 PM
First the so called reformists clamoured for amendments to the party constitution providing for election of the leader. But when the actual election came, the leader of the reformists got cold feet and opted to accept an insignificant position called "co-deputy leader" as he had no guts to contest for the leadership knowing very well what his fate would be. Now that Ranil has been elected as the leder by the working committee as per the constitution, it is right for him to continue until the next election is due. Those who are now in a hurry to take over leadership should wait for their chance, and that is the way it should work in when it involves party discipline.

Dear mr Ranil Wickramasighe, We know you are a genuine person. Please listen to the people of this country and take the post of Oppesition leader leaving UNP leader ship to others. I think you are not selfish to destroy our Grand party. UNP should be there and must able to convince the village people of this country that the leadership is caring them. Get example Mr JRJ. He managed his team nicely. He became president by using Mr R Premadasa, Lalith , and gamini. Under your leadership howmanyUNPers left the party. We need a change. If you don't listen., peole will refuse you and UNP both.

Mr Ranil is correct. As a well organised organisation has the procedure to follow do any changes but Sajith and his team is so hurry to get the leader ship with short cut. Even the results of the party is same and some time worst. Sajith wants to implement his fathers policy and all the Srilankan are knew that how he worked with Larans mafia etc.

In today's context Ranil is the only person who is fit to be the party leader. The others who are making a big noise are opportunists, and Karu who is being put forward is an opportunist as well as a turn-coat as his record proves. In them
there appears to be a hidden agenda to dismember the UNP for the benefit of the party in power. There will be only one party rule thereafter as in China, Libya, Russia etc who have been befriended in the recent past.

whether it is Ranil, Karu or Sajith, the president's popularity will be there for sometime, and the way the the government is running today, it will take some time for any opposition party to defeat the government. Ranil is a gentleman, and as the government loses popularity, he will be able to gain momentum. If anyone thinks the problem is at the top, it is wrong.

What baffles me is that this man is not one bit interested in winning an election...he just plays along putting up a show at every election, he doesn't want to make UNP a winning force ..... But just look at the way he is hanging on to the leadership of UNP, he is doing every trick in the book to keep it. My contention is that he is under contract by MR to keep things this way...if one looks at the political situation in SL now, MR has the best opposition and he will do what ever to keep Ranil in that position and prevent a strong opposition from emerging. For democracy to prosper we need a good opposition and for that to happen this man must be removed
