According to Article 132 and Sub-Article 2 of the Constitution, the interim order given by the Supreme Court staying the arrest of former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not effective, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said today.
He told journalists that under these Articles it was not correct for a Supreme Court bench comprising a maximum of three judges to exercise ordinary jurisdiction and that a two-judge bench could only exercise jurisdiction when taking up an urgent appeal for inquiry.
The Prime Minister said he would seek the opinion of the Attorney General on this matter.
He said the interim order would not prevent investigations and further questioning of the former defense secretary but only stay his arrest.
When asked by the journalist, the Prime Minister said he had not received any notice from the Supreme Court that he was respondent cited in the petition filed by Mr. Rajapaksa. However, he said obtained a copy of notice sent to the Cabinet.(Yohan Perera)

Appointing RW as prime minister was done by the President in accordance with the powers vested in him. It is up to the majority in parliament to reject him. If the parliament has not rejected him then they accept his legitimacy. He has all the right to remain the PM.

Good jonb Mr. Prime Minister. This is a question about tax payers money and public property. There is no hidden agendas. They must face the consequences. If we dont do that, there will be disatrouse outcome in the future for everyone. Our children and their supporters may think that they can get away easily by doing this also. You have all the rights to challenge judiciary if they have done something wrong.

He seems to be completely misguided by lawyers. This is a fundamental rights case and an interim order issued. If there is an agreement between two judges what is the technicality he points out for a requirement of a third judge. Suppose the third judge is against the order, but still the notice can be issued with the assent of two judges. Still any technical defect should be interpreted by the SC and not by PM.

With the current govt any human being can complain to the courts and take legal action against the govt, this is in contrast to the previous govt where your case will be turned down or you will be a white van victim.anyway those who have sinned by killing must pay someday. do you think GR is innocent, if innocent let the law takes its usual course ??all wrong doers must be punished in the court of law no matter what.

I think Ranil(AS a PM) is criticising SC judgement using his political power. It is contempt of court.Inside Parliament of course you can raised any question relating to any jugement.under parlimentory privilages. But other places you cannot criticise any court decision.,irespective of their position. People got rid of the previous regime because of corruptions. Ranil became the PM promising to eliminate corruptions. But his good friend Mahendran CB Governor (a Singaporean) and his SIL stole the country billions within 4 weeks of his appointment. But why does Ranil fail to take action on this daylight robbery. Everyone must keep asking this question from Ranil until he gives a very clear answer.

News circulates that you are not in favour of action being taken against the Rajapakses. There appears to be some truth in this because the day following elections you only reported that Mohan Peris, G.L. Peris, Inspector General of Police, Attorney General and others were with MR in the early hours of the morning. A coup was suggested, but upto now the public are not aware of any investigations being done.
