India hopes for successful TNA dialogue

Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said today that her country would be happy if the talks between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) resulted in a mutually acceptable solution to the national question while preserving the unity of the country.
Ms. Rao a former Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka told journalists that India hoped Sri Lanka which it considered friend would do what was necessary to usher lasting peace in the country.
“India is a friend and a partner of Sri Lanka and as such will like Sri Lanka to take the necessary steps to bring about lasting peace to the once war-torn country and thus enable the minorities to resume their normal lives and attain their full potential by contributing to the country’s development.
There is a dialogue between Tamil political parties and the Sri Lankan Government and we will like that dialogue to result in a mutually acceptable solution, keeping in mind the need to preserve Sri Lanka’s unity,” she said.
When asked about the implementation of the 13th Amendment to Sri Lanka’s Constitution, she responded saying, “I think it is for the Sri Lankan government to take a decision on how it approaches this issue. There is the 13th Amendment and there is the issue of how you devolve certain powers to the provinces. (KB)
