India inks double taxation avoidance pact with SL

India and Sri Lanka have signed an agreement for avoidance of double taxation. External Affairs Ministers of the two countries signed the agreement in New Delhi on Tuesday. This was one of the three agreements signed between India and Sri Lanka.(The Hindu)

The correct title is an "Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation". In essence, the Agreement seeks to ensure that a person or entity earning or doing business in the other country will only be taxed in one country, i.e. either in India or in SriLanka. Hence, he will not attract tax liability in both (Double Tax). The Agreement spells out exactly how the tax liability is determined and is actually beneficial to investors/expats.
