India is the cricket world champion for the second time after beating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the World Cup final in Mumbai, India, on Saturday.
India, cheered by a sell-out crowd of 33,000 at the Wankhede stadium, surpassed the challenging target with 10 balls to spare as Dhoni pounded Nuwan Kulasekara for the winning six.
India had slumped to 31-2 by the sixth over when sling-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga dismissed Virender Sehwag (0) second ball and had star batsman Sachin Tendulkar (18) caught behind in his fourth over.
Gambhir, who was dropped on 30 and escaped a run-out chance on 49, turned the match around by adding 83 for the third wicket with Virat Kohli and 109 for the fourth with Dhoni.
Yuvraj Singh, who was named the man of the tournament, partnered his skipper till the end with 21 not out after Gambhir was bowled by Thisara Perera in the 42nd over when 52 more were still needed.
Dhoni’s men emulated Kapil Dev’s compatriots who won the 1983 World Cup by beating the West Indies in the final at Lord’s in London.
The victory, watched by Indian President Pratibha Patil and Sri Lanka’s head of state Mahinda Rajapakse, was the first occassion a team had won the tournament on home soil.
It was only the third time in 10 World Cup finals that a side batting second had chased down the victory target.
The finale gave Tendulkar, the world’s most successful Test and one-day batsman, his first World Cup title in six appearances since 1992.
The defeat ended Sri Lankan star bowler Muttiah Muralitharan’s dream of being part of a second World Cup-winning team, having won the title under Arjuna Ranatunga in 1996 in Lahore.
Muralitharan, who turns 39 next month, went wicketless in eight overs to end his career with a record 800 Test and 534 one-day wickets.
Confusion reigned at the toss, which had to be performed twice after match referee Jeff Crowe did not hear Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara’s call when Dhoni threw up the coin.
Jayawardene shored up Sri Lanka’s innings before tailenders Nuwan Kulasekara (32 off 30 balls) and Thisara Perera (22 off nine) helped their team smash 63 runs in the last five overs of power-play.
India’s left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan dried up the flow of runs at the start and his two wickets made him the tournament’s leading bowler alongside Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi with 21 wickets each.
Zaheer opened with three successive maidens and then struck with the first ball of his fourth over when Sehwag dived to his right in the slips to remove Upul Tharanga for two.
Fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth lifted the pressure by conceding 15 runs in his fifth over that included a no-ball and a warning for running in the danger area in his follow-through.
Sreesanth, who was preferred ahead of spinner Ravichandran Ashwin after Ashish Nehra was ruled out with a fractured finger, was thrashed for 52 runs in his eight overs.
Tillakaratne Dilshan, going into the final as the tournament’s leading scorer with 467 runs, made 33 when he was bowled by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh to make Sri Lanka 60-2 in the 17th over.
Jayawardene put on 62 for the third wicket with Sangakkara (48) and 57 for the fourth with Thilan Samaraweera (21).

unprofessional bowling rotation by sangakkara. When India 2 down he should have kept the pressure rather than saving the best bowlers till end.
I THOUGHT WE HAD THIS EASILY IN OUR BAG AFTER 275 CHASE.
Now 2 worldcup final lost in a row. Someone should take the responsibility.

To the negative comments, you guys should be ashamed of calling yourself sri lankans at a time like this and making stupid comments and bring in politicians into this. Cricket is cricket. Statistics and history doesn’t matter. It is the day’s play which matters. India team played really well, so does the Sri Lanka team. Indians were slightly ahead of us and that’s why they are the 2011 cricket world champions. Anyway the way the Sri Lankan team played was outstanding and we are really proud of Sanga and his team.

Thank God to see that my prediction on the WC final, based on numerology has been proved correct.India won by 6 wickets.Dhoni was born on July 7,1981.His fate number is 33 that adds up to 6.My prediction was based on the findings that Dhoni is influenced by numbers 2 and 7.I have been occasionally writing about this influence from the time Dhoni was appointed captain.
It was on another Saturday that India lifted the ist Wc in 1983.

Congrats India for the victory. Sri Lanka may have been defeated but not disgraced. A very healthy total put up in the end after the initial struggle. Well done boys! sorry, it was good to leave mendis.. coz indians played spinners superbly and mendis could not have made any difference. Lanka had a chance only if kulasekara or perera had bowled complimenting malinga. India's plan of negotiating murali and malinga worked out well. As per records, Mendis had already been thrashed nicely by indians in Srilankan soil itself. So, mendis was good as a spectator.

Only one team could win the cup, but Upul Taranga scored 2 runs off 5 overs led poor bating performances, (45 overs 272 Runs & India got the same rate), Also Can’t understand why changed the winning combination?. SL Team has a serious problem of not wining the final. Arjuna's comment on middle order too led to demoralize those players after selecting them. He shouldn’t have told that in the first place. Well played India.

Well said #theja345. Just go back to the comments in the DM of April 1st; it was full of nonsense like "No one can beat the LIONS", etc., etc., and every one was full of praise for Muralitharan. The only people who acted with class were the members of the SL cricket team.

Sangakkara should have used Muralis 10 overs. He was the most economical bowler. I don't understand his logic behind using kulasekara when Murali had two more overs to bowl.
And it was quite apparent that we were short of one bowler. I really don't understand why Ajantha mendis was dopped. You dont come in to the finals with three completely new guys. You uses your most seasoned guys.
And the fielding was horrific, if we had saved minimum 10 runs on the field we would have won.

All Srilankans should be extremely proud of their team and its efforts. I am an Indian but after last night I have more respect for Sri Lanka than any other cricketing nation in the world. Had South Africa was not defeated in Quarter Finals, I don't think Sri Lanka would have been in Finals. They got the weakest team against in Semi Finals. Also India was in Group B which was the toughest because even the associate countries gave a real fight test playing nations. Where as in Group A after 3 rounds, it was very clear that all four major teams will go to quarter. The remaining matches were played in that group just to decide the rankings in the group. Take India they played against tough teams right from day 1 of the tournament. The only weak link for India was bowling but it did well in Final against SL. Like Sanga said, it needs at least 350 runs on board to play against the strong Indian batting line up. The same was felt by Ponting...

Sangakara paid the price for underestimating INIDA....by including new faces for the Dream Final. The inclusion of the kapugedra, Perera was a great mistake and also including murali who was not fit fully also a mistake... Murali is a champion but a player should be fully fit and should be in form for making to play in XI.... Jayawardena is great but his century went in vain...Dilshan proved he is not a big match player and finally the Fielding let Lanka to drop the WC 2011. (Kulasekara's bowling was not upto the mark and his drop catch droped the WC 2011.......Congrats to srilanka to make a thrilling finale........

Sri Lanka lost due to poor captaincy decision, The total of 274 could have been defended easily.

What nonsense? Indians won the match because they played well and not because of your predictions. Throw your predictions in to dust bin. Or else, my prediction on your fate will follow. You will be finished off the moment you introduce yourself to me. Because, your name start with D and your initials are MK. So your DMK is your death knell.

Whatever the outcome, I had said at the start of the tournament that I want to see Murali at the Mumbai final and my wish came true. Murali is Indias all time favourite.

LET ME POINT OUT TO ALL THE SRI LANKANS IN THE WORLD.
This is the second world cup final we faced in a raw and i simply believe that we should have bagged this one easily. We had the enough run to defend and the best bowling attack. Although i was surprised to see 3 fast bowlers for the final. Mendis should be always play in the final. Your best bowlers and your best bowlers.
The bowling rotation by sangakkara was utterly unprofessional. He kept his two bowlers till end rather than increasing the pressure. this has been the greatest weakness of sangakkara during last 3-4 years.
when Indian chips down he should have increased the pressure by bringing murali. He just let 3 and 4 Indian batsmens to freely score and get the singles to build the platform to launch at end.
One day cricket is a like chess. Not gamble. You might have the best aces in your whole but if you don’t manage them properly your path destruction will open.

Padmini, is this the way you treat our cricketers? What a shame? Win or lose they are our heros.
