Inquiries about camels
The Livestock Development Ministry had made inquiries about the prices of camels in Middle-Eastern countries through the Sri Lankan diplomatic missions, Deputy Minister H.R. Mithrapala said.
Mr. Mithrapala, during the budget debate earlier this month, said that the government decided to farm camels and ostriches in Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, he said that inquiries were made about the prices of camels in some countries such as Saudi Arabia. “I personally contacted the Sri Lankan Embassy in Saudi Arabia. Prices of camels are very high. Anyway, we will get a detailed report very soon,” he said.
Asked for the reason to farm these animals in Sri Lanka, he said that the government expected an increase of tourists from Arabic countries in the future and therefore, their favored food items such as camel milk should be made available for them in the island.
“There should also be diversity in livestock industry,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Leave the camels where they belong: in desert areas. What affluent Arab tourist comes to Sri Lanka thinking he will have to have his camel milk? And I think the question of ostriches for their eggs is an equally half baked idea! I might be wrong, but I think most 21st century people in the Middle East drink cow's milk and some goat's milk. The latter, by the way, is being imported already from the USA!

I don't think this report is correct. Very unprofessional reporting as usual.
They government is looking at camels milk and ostrich eggs as alternative nutrients for Sri Lankans. Somebody must have joked that the govt. is looking at bringing these down for Arab tourists who come here and the reporter must have overheard this joke and taken it seriously.4 2

You're missing the point Asoka. Be it for nutrition or otherwise, the ministry is going against nature introducing animals into our eco system that are completely foreign... We have to spend extra just to maintain them because their genetic makeup is not used to our environment/ eco system. Good example is what happened with the pythons which were introduced in Florida that started threatening their bio diversity. This is clearly an idea that was not thought through at all...

This is excellent news. Why did no one think of such a unique idea?? Camels have very thick skins, fairly intelligent and there is a special breed that can carry anyone over a long distance. With petrol prices escalating, a herd of camels for every MP and Minister is a definite need. Reduce the tax for ministers and MPs but there should be a higher tax for jokers and idiots.

we do not have any coconuts in Sri Lanka but we import camels! Are these people mad. Why not increase our domestic agro products to maximum and earn enough foreign currency then we can import camel milk. It is like buying the cat with the sack, without knowing what we are getting. Has anybody made a plausibility study or any risk analysis on this matter?

Dear Minister,
First of all think about to develop our country using natural sources which sri lanka already has.importing Camels from other countries is caused to get commissions through monkey business. so that u will not get any profitability via this project. Also please be awre if you don't know. That all Middle east peoples are comming to visit sri lanka to have sri lankan specialities.If they need to drink Camel Milk. They have better chance to get them in their countries, So don't try to give others to do Monkey business that easily Politician can involve0 0

Dear Minister ...Please try with Indian authorities,they may help you in finding good ,economical camel in their country. It's available in Rajasthan state and already started giving Qurbani even in small villages from Kerala and Tamil nadu states. The cost will be , about forty thousand Indian Rupees for one good camel. Zulfeekar

Also, if tourists are coming from the Arabian countries let them experience life in Sri Lanka as it is without trying to create a mini middle east in Sri Lanka. That is such a foolish reason to bring camels to the country... We should be promoting our authenticity... not mimic what they get in their own countries 365 days of the year... Unbelievable!!

Mr. Minister, do you aware of other problems regarding bringing down camels and other non residential animals to us ?????? I think you should refer to countries like Australia, they have huge problems with camels, think they too need food, grass, our elephants even do not have enough food, tourists come and go but we have to live here, so think thrice before you take such actions, on the other hand we should show the tourist our land and our culture not promote there habits in our country.
